You should try playing as the Shoshone, I find being able to specify what I do with my ruins can help quite a bit.

Never trust Ghandi.

As well as never trusting Ghandi the warmonger I would suggest you try going for a particular type of victory and aim for that, Tech is the easiest iirc.

Don't build too many cities, four or five is enough for most victories.

Read the description of each civ/ruler to see which type of victory they are best suited to.

Don't trust the recommended locations for building cities, it often suggests some really bad locations.

Best way to win is to stay ahead in the tech race so you've always got the advantage when it comes to military units.

Build as many Wonders as possible.

Found your cities in places where they will have access to as many possible resources as possible (though don't forget strategic importance, coastal cities for example), although building on a river tile is a good idea too.

As soon as you can make sure you have workers improving all your resource tiles, also go into the city and see what different focuses can do, swapping that stuff around can lead to big advantages.

I'd also recommend only building a handful of cities, you can get away with as little as 3 and still have most options open to you if you have a technological advantage.

When you go to war Puppet any cities you capture, you might not get to choose what they build but they also don't cause as much drag on your Civ and can add plenty of other benefits. You can end up with the majority of cities under your control and still only have actually founded a few.

If you get to late game you'll need to cultivate good relationships with the City States, this means giving them money/stationing spys/completing missions. You can easily have all the city states in alliance with you if you play it right (this also make victory a certainty).

Nice work.

When I do it I normally just screw with them all and have the first religion and god bother everyone I can find.

I really enjoy the religion aspect. I love trying to bomb my enemies cities with prophets until I can get an entire continent following my pantheon.

It doesnt do much to help winning games, mind.

Shared religion gives a tourism boost, and also a diplomacy boost if the other Civ hasn't founded their own.

I never bother with the religion crap as it adds very little benefit.

It might help with diplomatic victory but in 800+ hours of gameplay I've never managed it once.

Is there anyway to stop it auto buying prophets near the beginning, or should I want it to do this?

I appreciate this is Kotaku, but this is a fairly interesting bio of Sid Meier in light of him turning 60 recently;
