Would be amazing if Sunak had a regular press conference and then at the end went "oh, and one more thing......."

"The general election is live now, in all local polling stations!"

It's basically just football twitter, lots of "itk!" people pretending they know which manager is about to be sacked.

We just need the King to give Sunak a vote of confidence.

It's July next week? :shock:

Vennells is absolutely falling apart under questioning at the Post Office inquiry. (No sympathy for her.) Everything I hear makes it sound like she was completely incompetent, not up to the job, but very well rewarded for her failure. Now she's in tears in a public inquiry. What an inspirational leader.

Can someone sensecheck my figures here? I tried to work out how much money Sunak would have wasted by calling the election for July instead of bundling it in with the May local elections. I can only find comparable figures for the costs of the 2015 general election and 2016 PCC local elections.

2016 PCC Elections
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... ctions.pdf

Total: £49,598,266.34

£47.4 million for Returning Officers'expenses
£2 million for Returning Officers' services
£0.2 million payment for the printing and postage of candidate booklets requested via thechoosemypcc.org.uk website and the free phone number provided

2015 General Election
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... ection.pdf

Total: £114,732,548

£2.44 million for Returning Officers' services;
£70.44 million for Returning Officers' expenses;
£0.24 million for postal vote 'sweeps
£41.61 million for delivery of candidate mailings

So given that the returning officers expenses and services could have been combined into one election, I make that at least £50 million he's wasted. And bare in mind these figures are like ten years old and before a period of record inflation. Certainly feels like a journalist should be asking this question to government.

Look, we know we're going to lose. If we put a bullet in it now, we can spend the summer in the Hamptons, then start all our new consultancy jobs in September.

He's just made his announcement and it's far more shocking than an election.

If I had the skill, I'd put Sunak's head on that Wii remote drumming gif.

Alas :(.

If you drop July and August June does become the second half of the year.

It would be hilarious if every Tory standing down at the GE threw in a letter to the 1922 committee because he's robbing them of 4 months wages.

Did you know, they get a "winding-up budget" even if they choose not to stand again?

Every bloody thing is geared towards giving them more money.

After the 2019 election, 154 former MPs were each given £8,400.
