Super Nintendo Review 164 SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron (YouTube Video in progress, should drop in a few days)

OK so I feel that to start this off I need to give a little bit of a history lesson into who the SWAT Kats are. SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron was a 1993-1994 American Animated TV series produced by Hanna-Barbera Cartoons. In short its the story of Jake "Razor" Clawson and Chance "T-Bone" Furlong who were originally members of Megakat City's law enforcement agency, the Enforcers. They were discharged from the Enforcers after disobeying order and reassigned to work in the city's military salvage yard, while working there they use discarded military parts and weapons to build themselves a three-engine jet fighter called the Turbokat. Razor and T Bone become the SWAT Kats and keep their identities secret from everyone and use there skills and there jet fighter to patrol there home Megakat City and defend it against anyone who threatens the city and those in it.

Its not something that I was into back in the day but I have to give credit where credit is due SWAT Kats became the number one syndicated animated show of 1994, according to the Nielsen Television Index. Despite this the show was pretty suddenly cancelled so quickly in fact that there were unfinished episodes, this is due to Ted Turner, owner of Turner Entertainment who I am sure you will have heard of if you were ever into your wresting after all he purchased Jim Crockett Promotions and turned it into what wrestling fans will know as WCW. Well Turner was reportedly displeased with the level of violence in the cartoon, he felt that with Hanna-Barbera they had access to The Flintstones, The Jetsons, the Smurfs, and Scooby-Doo. Which are all largely non-violent. And that these were the kinds of things kids should be watching a bit ironic coming from a guy putting wrestling on TV don't you think?
OK so back to the game SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron, it was developed by AIM, and published by Hudson Soft, it came out on June the 9th, 1995, in Japan and on August the 21st 1995, in North America it never received a European release. A Sega Mega Drive game based on the SWAT Kats was also in development around the same time, it was being worked on by Traveller's Tales but it was cancelled before being completed , little is known about this version though it is claimed to have been totally unrelated to the Super Nintendo game maybe some form of work in progress rom will drop one day who knows.

So with a strong back story featuring action based characters who also own there own plane you would think that you have all you need here for a kick ass game well things start of well as you are given the choice to play as either Razor or T-Bone, you pick who ever appeals to you the most and then your playing a side scrolling platformer with plenty of combat. I will give the game credit in that your choice between T-Bone or Razor is more than a cosmetic one T-Bone is slower, and can't jump as high but has the more powerful weapons . Razor is a fair degree faster, can jump higher, and has a jetpack. I personally found attacking a lot of the enemies too much of a pain in the butt, they either hover around and you find yourself jumping up and down shooting like a mental kangaroo trying to get your height just right to hit them or when you hit them small enemies come out of them which will then hit you, a lot of the time I just found myself deciding to jump over things or outrun them and that wasn't very fun, give me a range of attacks at different heights let me shoot in an arc like I am playing Gunstar Heroes or something decent.

The graphics are bright and well I would describe them as being better than average but there nothing that special, you fight a lot of the same things again and again oh look its a new enemy no its not its the pink blob from the last level now coloured in blue. I will say that I enjoyed the music in this game it is kind of rocky and funky and is the only thing which in my opinion really adds any kind of positive emotion to this game, it tries its hardest to provide a real sense of action a sense of action the gameplay doesn't really live up to.

These side scrolling parts of the game are not amazing but there decent enough, I do think that they could have done with a lot more work but where the game really falls down is with the flying sequences whoever programmed these could not have play tested them so basically you control there plane the Turbo Cat in a descending view, in the first of these levels your heading towards a blue slime monster while red mouths with wings fly up towards you firing at you, you have a cursor to show where your shots are going to go but the thing controls like utter garbage and any thing you manage to hit is by pure chance, also if they hit you once you die, usually I would say that getting levels which are a different game genre actually help to break games up and help to keep things from getting repetitive but here these levels are just an unwelcome hindrance, I would rather of not had these levels, id sooner of had some side scrolling shoot em up R-type sort of level thrown in or just had them put more effort in to the platforming sections. I think we had these levels though because they look good as static screen shots so they were probably great for raising hype in magazines when included in preview articles on upcoming games.

So how would I score Swat Kats well I would give it a 4 out of 10 its a really wasted opportunity in my opinion, I think that the source material could have been a good starting point to make a heck of a game. Its not like this is a cheap game to get either it never came out in Europe and looking for it online I have not seen very many copies of it at all and when I have seen them the prices have been absolutely ridiculous. In order to review this game I purchased a Reproduction cart well partly to review it and partly due to an interest in how Repro's are made, but I also tried it using an Everdrive and using an emulator as I wanted to make sure I gave the game a fair shot after all I would hate to rate a game based on what I have played and then find something I have experienced like a low frame rate or stuttering is due to an issue with my copy but I can say that this game is not worth the kind of price it commands heck I barely think it is worth the £4.80 the repro version I got cost me, if your interested in this game then I recommend that you try emulating it as I am sure after a quick go you will find that you'd sooner spend your money on almost anything else.

Yeah the graphics are great and a lot of characters from the show crop up, it just doesn't play as well as it should which is a real shame, I thought it would be awesome with it being a Konami game, its one of those games that although its bad you know with some more polish it could have been great, it just needed the controls tightening, a lot of it is to do with it not being flat you can go up and down the screen like in a fighter like streets of rage but then you have to make jumps that depend on you being at the exact right layer if that makes sense, if they couldn't work it properly they should have made it more flat like Mario. Its crying shame that Whacko Yacko and Dot didn't get a better game.

I honestly cant believe how many of these Videos I have made now or how long I have been working on this project, I kept thinking about switching to a new project but it just seems to be easier to let this one slowly carry on.

I am about half of the way through turning my written Super Return of the Jedi Review in to a YouTube Video , I would assume that I will probably get it done by either late tomorrow or some time Wednesday.
