Super Nintendo Review 164 SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron (YouTube Video in progress, should drop in a few days)

OK so I feel that to start this off I need to give a little bit of a history lesson into who the SWAT Kats are. SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron was a 1993-1994 American Animated TV series produced by Hanna-Barbera Cartoons. In short its the story of Jake "Razor" Clawson and Chance "T-Bone" Furlong who were originally members of Megakat City's law enforcement agency, the Enforcers. They were discharged from the Enforcers after disobeying order and reassigned to work in the city's military salvage yard, while working there they use discarded military parts and weapons to build themselves a three-engine jet fighter called the Turbokat. Razor and T Bone become the SWAT Kats and keep their identities secret from everyone and use there skills and there jet fighter to patrol there home Megakat City and defend it against anyone who threatens the city and those in it.

Its not something that I was into back in the day but I have to give credit where credit is due SWAT Kats became the number one syndicated animated show of 1994, according to the Nielsen Television Index. Despite this the show was pretty suddenly cancelled so quickly in fact that there were unfinished episodes, this is due to Ted Turner, owner of Turner Entertainment who I am sure you will have heard of if you were ever into your wresting after all he purchased Jim Crockett Promotions and turned it into what wrestling fans will know as WCW. Well Turner was reportedly displeased with the level of violence in the cartoon, he felt that with Hanna-Barbera they had access to The Flintstones, The Jetsons, the Smurfs, and Scooby-Doo. Which are all largely non-violent. And that these were the kinds of things kids should be watching a bit ironic coming from a guy putting wrestling on TV don't you think?
OK so back to the game SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron, it was developed by AIM, and published by Hudson Soft, it came out on June the 9th, 1995, in Japan and on August the 21st 1995, in North America it never received a European release. A Sega Mega Drive game based on the SWAT Kats was also in development around the same time, it was being worked on by Traveller's Tales but it was cancelled before being completed , little is known about this version though it is claimed to have been totally unrelated to the Super Nintendo game maybe some form of work in progress rom will drop one day who knows.

So with a strong back story featuring action based characters who also own there own plane you would think that you have all you need here for a kick ass game well things start of well as you are given the choice to play as either Razor or T-Bone, you pick who ever appeals to you the most and then your playing a side scrolling platformer with plenty of combat. I will give the game credit in that your choice between T-Bone or Razor is more than a cosmetic one T-Bone is slower, and can't jump as high but has the more powerful weapons . Razor is a fair degree faster, can jump higher, and has a jetpack. I personally found attacking a lot of the enemies too much of a pain in the butt, they either hover around and you find yourself jumping up and down shooting like a mental kangaroo trying to get your height just right to hit them or when you hit them small enemies come out of them which will then hit you, a lot of the time I just found myself deciding to jump over things or outrun them and that wasn't very fun, give me a range of attacks at different heights let me shoot in an arc like I am playing Gunstar Heroes or something decent.

The graphics are bright and well I would describe them as being better than average but there nothing that special, you fight a lot of the same things again and again oh look its a new enemy no its not its the pink blob from the last level now coloured in blue. I will say that I enjoyed the music in this game it is kind of rocky and funky and is the only thing which in my opinion really adds any kind of positive emotion to this game, it tries its hardest to provide a real sense of action a sense of action the gameplay doesn't really live up to.

These side scrolling parts of the game are not amazing but there decent enough, I do think that they could have done with a lot more work but where the game really falls down is with the flying sequences whoever programmed these could not have play tested them so basically you control there plane the Turbo Cat in a descending view, in the first of these levels your heading towards a blue slime monster while red mouths with wings fly up towards you firing at you, you have a cursor to show where your shots are going to go but the thing controls like utter garbage and any thing you manage to hit is by pure chance, also if they hit you once you die, usually I would say that getting levels which are a different game genre actually help to break games up and help to keep things from getting repetitive but here these levels are just an unwelcome hindrance, I would rather of not had these levels, id sooner of had some side scrolling shoot em up R-type sort of level thrown in or just had them put more effort in to the platforming sections. I think we had these levels though because they look good as static screen shots so they were probably great for raising hype in magazines when included in preview articles on upcoming games.

So how would I score Swat Kats well I would give it a 4 out of 10 its a really wasted opportunity in my opinion, I think that the source material could have been a good starting point to make a heck of a game. Its not like this is a cheap game to get either it never came out in Europe and looking for it online I have not seen very many copies of it at all and when I have seen them the prices have been absolutely ridiculous. In order to review this game I purchased a Reproduction cart well partly to review it and partly due to an interest in how Repro's are made, but I also tried it using an Everdrive and using an emulator as I wanted to make sure I gave the game a fair shot after all I would hate to rate a game based on what I have played and then find something I have experienced like a low frame rate or stuttering is due to an issue with my copy but I can say that this game is not worth the kind of price it commands heck I barely think it is worth the £4.80 the repro version I got cost me, if your interested in this game then I recommend that you try emulating it as I am sure after a quick go you will find that you'd sooner spend your money on almost anything else.

Yeah the graphics are great and a lot of characters from the show crop up, it just doesn't play as well as it should which is a real shame, I thought it would be awesome with it being a Konami game, its one of those games that although its bad you know with some more polish it could have been great, it just needed the controls tightening, a lot of it is to do with it not being flat you can go up and down the screen like in a fighter like streets of rage but then you have to make jumps that depend on you being at the exact right layer if that makes sense, if they couldn't work it properly they should have made it more flat like Mario. Its crying shame that Whacko Yacko and Dot didn't get a better game.

I honestly cant believe how many of these Videos I have made now or how long I have been working on this project, I kept thinking about switching to a new project but it just seems to be easier to let this one slowly carry on.

Hi, kerr - I just watched your vid! I enjoyed how you described playing the game with your Star Wars-loving pal and also the section about games being released for the older consoles at the start of a new generation. You made a good call on the Wii Virtual Console, too - it's surprising to remember just how much good stuff was available on it!

Nice work, dude! :toot: .

Thank you very much :)

I like to kind of go off on why games are important to me or how it came into my life as that's the bit that's original and different after all anyone can review stuff but not everyone can tell your story about a game and what it means to you.

Super Nintendo Review 165 Goemon 2 AKA Legend of the Mystical Ninja 2

The Legend of the Mystical Ninja known in Japan as Ganbare Goemon: Yukihime Kyūshutsu Emaki was the 59th SNES game I reviewed during my series of 150 Super Nintendo games, is was an action adventure game for 1-2 players made by Konami and released for the Super NES in 1991 and it was a game I not only gave a 9 out of 10 but I also strongly recommend it. Well in Europe this was Goemon's only outing on the SNES yet over in Japan there were plenty more Goemon games which brings me to the 165th SNES game I am going to review and thats Goemon 2 or to give it its full title Ganbare Goemon 2: Kiteretsu Shōgun Magginesu. Back in the day I never even realised that this game existed, heck if I had known that it did I would have purchased it, but back in the SNES days if it wasn't in your local import shops then it kind of just didnt exist. Even when you saw import titles it was hard going when deciding if to buy a particular one or not as you never quiet knew how much trouble you were going to get into trying to play them, would it run on your hardware with your particular adaptor and if it did would it even be playable or would the language barrier be far too deep for the game to be enjoyable?

In order to review this game I played it in a number of different ways, I imported a cartridge only copy of the game and got by with it quiet nicely the language barrier will stop you fully knowing what's going on but it wont stop you enjoying the game, I did however also download a translated ROM. I cant begin to under state how amazing the whole translated ROM thing is nowadays, never in a million years as a kid would I have ever thought that I would be downloading SNES games in code form and then applying patches to them that were made by talented fans which would either put a foreign game into my language or add to them in some way. This all seems like some kind of magic to me and yet this is coming from someone who started gaming in the micro-computer days someone who had seen games written down as code and seen that this code could be manipulated, the building blocks where there and yet I find myself astounded by it all.

OK so the story of the game is roughly that a foreigner by the name of Magginesu Shogun has invaded Japan and is wreaking absolute mayhem upon and it’s up to Goemon AKA Kid Ying to give him his Mystical Ninja name and Ebisumaru AKA Dr Yang to defeat the bad guys and to go on to rescue their friend Omitsu. A third character has been added to this sequel and he is a mechanical ninja named Sasuke. Who you choose to play as will depend on your play style as well as most likely who you think looks the coolest Goemon is sort of the middle average character he uses his signature pipe and can toss coins, his movement speed is average, then you have the slower but powerful Ebisumaru leaving Sasuke as the quickest character he slices up the enemies very quickly with his daggers and as he was new and looked pretty cool I found myself drawn to him but the cool thing is the characters feel different enough that you'll want to try all 3 of them.

Unlike in the fist game you have an overworld map, with the game consisting of 6 regions in Japan, and in each region you have several stages, also unlike in the first game in Goemon 2, there are no enemies in the town for you to have to fight. Sure you still have your weapon while your in towns but as long as you don't mess with the townsfolk then they wont mess with you, if you do hit one of the towns people then everyone in town will get annoyed and they will all attack you.

In the towns you can also find a whole bunch of different shops which will allow you to replenish your health and armour, you will be able to save your progress by staying at the inns. When it comes to the action stages they are similar to those in the first game but there are some neat little additions such as a number of different vehicles to ride, including an orange fish that hops around on land or travels quickly on the water, a jeep and even mechanical sumo suits that this kind of reminds me of other games such as metal slug and it helps break up the stages.

The game is full of the same sort of great Japanese style graphics and music as the first one along with the same sort of signature craziness but it dials it to 11 when you reach the point towards the end of a stage when your given Goemon Impact your very own Goemon inspired Mecha with which to smash through cities destroying both enemies and building in order to collect both energy and money. Once you have done this you progress into a Mode 7 first person combat mode while in your mech where you do battle with another giant robot. These are your boss battles (This part is new to this game not having featured in the previous title but from this point on they kind of become a staple part of the Goemon series). During this part you fight your opponent in what I could best describe as a sort of Punch out way, you can punch, toss coins, block, and throw a bomb and you need to defeat your opponent before it manages to defeat you . This is one of the best things about Goemon 2 as a game it keeps things fresh breaking up the action into different little chunks keeping everything feeling fresh and interesting.

So how would I rate this game ? Well I guess that depends on if your playing an original Japanese cartridge as a none Japanese speaking individual like me or if you have managed to get your hands on a translated copy. If your playing the original then I would give it a good old 8 out 10 as its a darn good game but your going to miss out on some of it due to the language barrier sure not enough of it to ruin the game but enough to not be getting quiet as good an experience if your playing it translated into English though fully able to understand and appreciate all of the whacky fun on offer here then I need to give this game a 9, heck I seriously considered giving it a 9.5 out of 10.

It is really really worth having a bash on especially if you can get a translated rom.

I have a 750gb Hardrive with so many bits and pieces on it, im sure if I dig through it I have some other translated roms and stuff to review....

I was thinking about Reviewing the last Bomberman I purchased next (I cant remember which it is its 3, 4 or 5), but kept reviewing Megadrive games as I have done so few of them in comparison.
