FIFA only selected the short lists. A team of journalists picked the winners.

Ah.

Lol. You didn't know either ?

Yeah I'm enjoying the montage as well, especially the look back at the group stage highlights. I actually feel kinda sad that it's over. I miss the days of 3 matches in one day

Rubbish.

Group stages was brilliant. As soon as we got to Quarter finals it has gone down hill.

It's still been the best one in ages.

Yeah but to say it's better than 94' 98' is just plain ignorance or you suffer from Amnesia.

On paper, sure but most of teams were pushed to the absolute limit which made it exciting.

1994 wasn't all that. 1990 and 2002 were good. This one was brilliant.

My favourite (in living memory) is still 2006, simply due to the Zidane masterclass, and the passion of the Italians.

WHAT!?

1990 was good 2002....hmm not really . 1994 was amazing from the opening . The amount of memorable stuff that happened was mind blowing. I was a child and I still remember it .

2002 was midday drinking in the sun, watching England beat Argentina

1990 was my first living memory of a World Cup and the game against Belgium was immense. Platt.

2002 was awful.

Poor German team made the final. All the big teams got knocked out early. Some because of dodgy referees and South Korea.

No. I can't accept that.
Midday drinking watching England, nothing can beat it.

Losing to Brazil at half 9 wasn't so fun.

Is influential necessarily the same as being the best? He was influential in the sense that he provided the sole spark of quality in a match that was often dire, and amongst team mates that often struggled to break a team down and seemed more concerned with stifling the game. That Argentina laboured past Iran and Messi ends up scoring counts as influential, but you wouldn't say Rio 2014 was "Mess's tournament".

I wouldn't say he "played" the best though. He was influential, but he wasn't always exciting, unplayable or tearing teams apart. He had very, very long spells were he was very quiet and, for me, other players did more. And some, like Rodriguez, did it with less game time too.

I was a little bemused that he won the Golden Ball, though I don't think he was quite as "bad" as some people here. He is still a great. Can you say he is better/worse than Maradona or Pele? That is totally subjective and is an argument that will never really be settled either way. I don't think you can say he isn't just because he hasn't won a World Cup.

Still, DBlock is the least objective football fan of all time. Messi could kill a man and he would still be in here crowing about how Ronaldo wouldn't have the guts to do it.

Great group stage let down by poor quarter finals onwards. Tonights final was shite.

The group stage from this world cup with the latter stages from 2006. Pow.

Ps. I strawberry floating hate Mario Goetze.

Not really.

Compare the Dutch team to Argentina team. Argentina have a lot of quality in their team. They have a decent defence. Mascherano one of the best cdms in the world. Di Maria, Lavezzi and Higuain are not a bad support act.

Robben nearly carried the Dutch to the final.

It's a good point, Robben was undeniably fantastic this tournament.

Comparing the two sides, I'd say Argentina had better players, but Holland had a better team if that makes sense. Sabellas tactics and substitutions didn't really seem to effect the game much and I'd say any great moments in the attacking third were in despite of his management than because of it. Compare that to LVG who was excellent throughout.

FWIW I don't think Messi should've won the award (I'd have given it to Muller or Rodriguez probably), I'm just saying that's how the people who did pick might have looked at it. You make a good point that Robben could certainly be considered under the same criteria though.

Wonderful stuff, so glad it was Germany. Spain winning it four years ago was indicative of how Spanish football was leading the way and it was the same here. Schweinsteiger was an absolute beast and the goal must go down as one of the best ever scored in a WC final
