Post2020 Screen Resolution Poll!
by Jenuall » Tue Aug 11, 2020 10:03 am

Given that we are on the cusp of a new generation of console hardware and that 4K is being given even greater focus after first steps toward it made by the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X in the console space as well as the continued race for extra power and resolution with the latest PC GPUs I thought it would be interesting to put up a poll to see what the most common screen resolutions are amongst the GRcade community!

So are you a 4K evangelist? A 1080P stalwart? Still living the HD Ready dream? Or are you holding firm to a classic SD screen to enjoy all those retro titles?

Is anyone planning on upgrading their display for the new generation or buying a machine they know is capable of more than their display can currently manage in the expectation of upgrading at some point in the future?

To keep it simple just pick the answer that best represents what you use as your "primary" gaming display.

1080p for me, as that's the best my TV is capable of.

Another thing (separate poll?) to think about is refresh rate.

I'm about to migrate to a new laptop that has a 1080p screen that has a 144 Hz refresh rate. I'm looking forward to trying to see the difference in terms of smoothness. To be honest I'm pretty resilient to low refresh rates (to the extent my current laptop can play stuff at all, it'll be at 30 fps!), but I imagine quadrupling what I'm used to will look quite nice!

I feel like 1440p @ 144 Hz will soon become the standard for high-end gaming. Seems like a good trade-off of high resolution, high refresh rate, and being achievable with a reasonably priced card.

4K. But i would never try to convince someone it was essential or a game changer in any way.

1080p - Will probably upgrade around the same time as upgrading console.

1080p. I generally don't rush to buy new hardware of any kind, and even though 4K's been around for a while now, I still don't see the point of it (for me) enough to justify any expense or hassle in changing TV.

1080p

When I eventually get a new TV (might be a couple of years yet) I would probably try to go for a 4k OLED, but mainly for the HDR.

Like Karl mentioned, 1440p 144hz seems the sweet spot with PC monitors, so when I upgrade those I would probably go for that spec. I have a 15" 4k laptop screen, and use a 42" 4k monitor for work, and 4k on PC doesn't feel 'essential'.

Native 4K, but I believe most games I play are either running at 1080p or checkerboard and then just upscaled.

I prefer the better graphics. Games running at 4K have a tendency to have a graphical downgrade and also have chugging frame rates. I’d rather have a solid 30 or 60fps than something that’s fluctuating like a yo-yo. Some of the later stuff in Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One X was ridiculous (the burnt out village).

1080.

4k is pointless in my opinion at the screen sizes if use it and the distance from the screen. People’s obsession with it is daft and just a matter of wanting higher numbers that other people for no reason other than “my numbers are bigger than yours”

My PC screen is 1080P/144Hz and my TV is 4K where I play my PS4 Pro, Xbox One X and Switch and honestly games look so much better on my PC (Modern Warfare looks miles better at 1080p maxed out with Ray Tracing on than it does on Warzone on console at 4K)

1080p is the best.

1080p. Struggling with the limited physical size of my existing TV though (32).

I’m waiting to see how much of a focus is on 120fps in the next few months leading up to the next gen launch before investing in a new screen. I’d favour frame rate over resolution.

Plus my internet connection won’t support 4K media steaming, and I’m not interested in buying UHD Blu-Rays, so I’m a bit hesitant about upgrading to 4K purely for gaming.

I think the refresh rate point is a good one, I would much rather see power go into making 60fps gaming and above a standard rather than just continuing to chase higher native resolutions.

Things like developments in DLSS have also blown the resolution situation wide open where upscaling from a lower native resolution can often now achieve a best of both worlds situation where the image quality is on par with native 4K but performance is significantly greater

I was going to do a follow up poll on screen size as it happens. I'm still playing on a relatively small screen as well so know your pain!

TV is 1080 so I voted that, but I play Switch handheld and probably the most so you could argue 720!

I don't see any reason to upgrade while the TV is still working. I also think pixel density is more important than resolution (especially when the viewing distance is 2-3 meters), so I'd rather have a smaller TV.

I've always wondered about 4k from this perspective. It seems like you'd have to sit quite close to a pretty large TV to see the extra clarity.

People that say this are often using it as a justification to themselves becuase they couldn't stretch to getting a bigger tv.

Stick a strawberry float off massive 4k tv in your front room and tell me it doesn't look incredible. I'm sat just over 2 metres from my tv and if you listen to those people I should have a tiny tv. strawberry float that, give me the biggest screen I can possibly have. When I'm playing racing games I pull my chair up as close as I can and I can't even see the edges from my peripheral vision, glorious.

Its about 7 ft for a 55" 4K screen. There is a table somewhere out there on the internet showing the distance at which any resolution benefits drop off. And yeah, i agree we are well in to diminishing returns now. VR on the other hand.....

OLED HDR is fantastic, but some of the calibration menus games use are so confusing that i end up getting stressed about whether i have optimized it. The HALO MCC HDR screen is just a complete mystery to me.

Absolutely agree. 60fps should be the standard next gen - 30fps games should be phased out. Or at the very least all games should offer a 60fps 'performance' option in each game.

I was very, very late to the Forza party and picked up Horizon 4 about a month ago. I had an absolute blast with that game so I picked up Horizon 3. Turns out I've been completely spoiled by the Horizon 4 60fps mode (One X) and I'm finding Horizon 3 (30fps, but pretty) really difficult to play as a result :(

Not a scooby. Got my TV in 2008, if that makes a difference, and it’s done me well ever since.
