With the future of the "24" franchise — and her role as Jack Bauer's latest trusty sidekick — in limbo, Yvonne Strahovski has gone back to the past in more ways than one with her new gig, playing one of the title roles in ABC's "Astronaut Wives" club, written and executive produced by Stephanie Savage, and by "Chuck" co-creator Josh Schwartz.

Based on the best-selling book by Lily Koppel, "Astronaut Wives Club" tells the story of the women behind NASA's early astronauts, and how they deal with being catapulted into national celebrity overnight even as their husbands are preparing to be launched into orbit.

Strahovski will play Rene Carpenter, wife of Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter. The press notes suggest that "Her modern attitudes are source of both conflict and courage for the other Astrowives. Over time, Rene finds her own voice and awakens to a higher calling in politics, civil rights and women’s issues." She joins a cast that already includes JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Betty Grissom and Odette Annable as Trudy Cooper.

Is this series worth getting on Blu-ray even though it's freely available on couchtuner and other streaming sites? And if I ask for it for Christmas, I bet it'll appear on one of the Netflix regions soon after. I always think it's a waste to buy things that are up on Netflix considering I pay £9 a month for that.

I'm on ep 5 on the Blu-ray. Margot is ruthless! A great baddie so far.

8 eps now watched. This is great. So far I would put it in the top 5 of all the 24s.

A pitch for another limited-series installment of the “24” franchise on Fox envisions a storyline that would revolve around supporting characters and not feature Sutherland’s intrepid covert op Jack Bauer.

The talk of more “24” came up Saturday during the exec Q&A session at Fox’s portion of the Television Critics Assn. press tour in Pasadena. The session marked the TCA debut for Gary Newman and Dana Walden, the longtime 20th Century Fox TV chiefs who took on oversight of Fox Broadcasting in July amid a shakeup at the network.

Newman and Walden cautioned that there is no deal and no plans are set in stone for more “24.” But a Bauer-free pitch for a new installment — following on the 12-episode limited series “24: Live Another Day” that aired on Fox this past summer — came recently from series stewards Howard Gordon, Evan Katz and Manny Coto. It’s tentatively targeted for 2016.

“We have great characters and that great creative team,” Walden said. She noted that it would be a one-time effort to experiment with highlighting supporting players, and she assured that the Jack Bauer character would remain the center of the show over the long haul. Sutherland is aware of the possibility and supportive, she added.
