Taiko Drum Master Race!

I've been playing since Meccha! Taiko no Tatsujin DS - Nana-tsu no Shima no Daibouken, or Taiko DS 2, if you prefer.

A while back I bought two of the drums for the Switch version, but I've never much used them for the same reasons as OR. I did discover recently, though, that with a few mod files they work perfectly with the PC Gamepass version of Taiko. Said version of Taiko has also been modded to include every song from all the arcade versions, as well as the vast majority of the console releases. Just something to consider. :shifty:

Did many of you play this or the Zelda spin off Cadence of Hyrule

I played both. Cadence is excellent and quite easy. Crypt is excellent and strawberry floating impossible. I have never felt so inept at a rhythm game.

Has anyone mentioned Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! or Elite Beat Agents yet?

Ouendan was one of the very few games I've ever bought on import based on word of mouth alone. A Nintendo DS game where you play as a gang of severely-dressed cheerleaders who help everyday citizens with tasks like homework and improving their pottery by cheering them on to the rhythm of contemporary J-pop hits? Yes please.

A western release as Elite Beat Agents about 18 months later was good, though the naff song choices (like the YMCA) lessened its impact somewhat.

Still got my copies of those two games despite not having a DS or any other DS games for years! They are very cherished indeed.

Severely-dressed is definitely the way to describe them! :slol:

I played the second Ouendan, not realising there was a first as they weren't numbered, but I've never tried Elite Beat Agents.

A lot of my taste in J-Pop stems from playing Ouendan and Taiko as a teenager!

Completely forgot about Ouendan - I remember the hype was crazy from people who'd imported it.

I did buy Elite Beat Agents, but I forgot about it when making my earlier list. I liked it, but it was let down by the track listing for sure.

(Seems like a good excuse to post this too)

I remember importing Ouendan and Trauma Center, and also buying Phoenix Wright all at the same time. What a time to be alive.

Ouendan was absolutely fantastic, but it killed the display.

I did the same when I first got a Gamecube around a year after launch, bought Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Eternal Darkness, Super Monkey Ball and Star Wars Rogue Squadron II on the same day.

Taiko no tatsujin is super fun in the arcades, but the little peripheral that came with the switch game just doesn't quite cut it. Doesn't seem as responsive and super loud, tho will probably try get back into it some time.

Beat Saber has been my rhythm game this year tho. So so good.

I'd recommend opening it up and replacing the foam pads with some corkboard and vinyl sheet, as per this guide. I did it to both of mine, and the difference is night and day!

The original, Rhythm Tengoku, is top drawer! I posted pics of my copy in the retro section a couple of years back.

It certainly was :toot:

One of the best gaming related moments in my life, up there with unexpectedly getting a Sega Saturn and buying a Playstation instead of doing GCSE revision

Ouendan was the first game I imported based on the hype of I think Hero of Canton on here?

I was always worried about it messing up the touch screen on my DS as you have to play so aggressively on the higher difficulties.

Due to legality issues with playing Switch in these recent climates and being somewhat inspired by this thread, I dug out my 3DS and started Rhythm Thief earlier. It seems really good! It certainly asks a bit more of you than the average rhythm game - it would appear you need to have an ear for tone / pitch also (which I love). The setting is all very Layton (which I like a lot).

It also has reminded me how lovely and light the 3DS is (even the 3DS XL). I was able to hold it in one hand with stylus in the other for an extended period of time without considering having to readjust (which might end up in the no context thread).

I couldn't actually use the 3ds when I bought one at launch as the weight difference between the upper and lower screens made it too top heavy for me to hold comfortably.

At the time I could still use my PSP and DS lite while resting my hands on a table but due to the nature of my condition I found my hands just couldn't adapt to the necessary grip.
