As pleased as I was when Ledger won, I'm equally disappointed that Penn won.

Admittedly, it's a little baseless, as I've not seen Milk, but I wanted to see Rourke win.

Anyone else think Penn's speech was abysmal? Preachy, self-righteous, everything I expected if he was to win it. At least with Rourke we'd have gotten some raw honesty instead this typical Hollywood bollocks.

To be honest, at the start of his promotion for The Wrestler I thought I'd dislike Rourke. But, though he is a little arrogant and probably abused his fame in his early life, I was impressed with how open he was about his mistakes.

In comparison, I think Sean Penn identifies the wankery that underlies most actors (I always think of Matt Stone and Trey Parker in their loathing of the art).

This was Rourke's big chance, as he'd have had a lot of goodwill riding on the back of him. Maybe he'll get another chance though, as The Wrestler wasn't supported in any of the categories, and that's what probably cost it.

I've never been fond of Penn but I know he can turn in a good role, but more often than not he's hammy and over the top. I feel that I'm only going to be let down by Milk because after the beautiful subtlety and nuances of The Wrestler and The Visitor it'll pale in comparison.

Yeah, even though not all the Oscar's have gone "my way" (I preferred Button to Slumdog, though still enjoyed the latter), the overriding feeling I have is one of disappointment that Rourke didn't win.

I mean, though it shouldn't count at all, it feels like a waste as I think it would have made more difference to Rourke than Penn, who has won before.

The whole Slumdog thing is strawberry floating jarring. 8 awards? Really?
I'm surely not the only one that thought it was...enjoyable but over-hyped? :?

Rourke was robbed! This was his time. Penn is the Academy's poster-boy.

But since when did the deserved winner win? Award ceremonies are a sack of shite. Always have been and always will be.

Not the first time Penn has stolen an award. Look at poor Bill Murray.

Come on, this is the Academy we're talking about. They wouldn't notice quality if it got them in a figure four leg lock.

Nice to see Penelope Cruz pick up the award for best supporting actress. She's hilarious in Vicky Cristina Barcelona and very, very hot.

Nah, Sean Penn thoroughly deserves his award. Milk is an outstanding performance from a truly gifted - if at times awkward - actor. I take nothing away from Rourke who I admire greatly, but Penn simply turned in a better performance overall. Very pleased to see him get an award - and a good acceptance speech, too. Pleased for Gus Van Sant, the director, too, who continues to turn in outstanding work.

:| 99% of Gus van Sant films are strawberry floating dross - he's got an absurd fixation with making everyone and anyone gay, especially young boys. Among a pretty dreary back catalogue, Elephant and Last Days are possibly the worst two films I've ever clamped eyes on.

The Academy giving Penn the award was a bloody fix, not least because they are indeed "homo lovin sons of guns". That's not to say he wasn't good but I'm always more inclined to go with an actor who creates something of their own, who goes by no real source material and who engages me most and that was Rourke.

That's why Ledger and Rourke were the only two performances that I've honestly felt compelled to follow-up award season for in a very long time. We missed out one hell of a speech, last night.

Winslet was totally bloody 'meh' but God forbid I say that to the girlfriend as she seems to love her :fp:

Good to see Boyle take an Oscar, it's just a pity it was for Slumdog. Overall it was a bit of a meh year for the Oscars, not enough great films and actors nominated this year.

Utter, utter bollocks. She was mesmerising in both The Reader AND Revolutionary Road and should have had two Best Actress noms. That said, it was a very strong year for Best Actress - Streep was great, Jolie was terrific and Hathaway was a real surprise in Rachel Getting Married.
