Gutted for Rourke. His was one of the best performances of the last decade, for my money.

He was affectively playing himself though.

I'll be seeing Milk on wednesday now, and The Readrer the day after with any luck. I'm looking forward to The Reader most as I thought the other nominees were terrific so Winslet must really be something special.

Sean Connery is known for mostly playing himself?

I heard it mention once that Sean Connery, as a Scottish working class man, didn't like the character of James Bond, the English gentleman, much. He would have much rather played a Bond villain.

Still, all in all, I bet he won't have much to complain. 'Being' Bond for a while hasn't been bad for his career...

In your opinion. Duly noted. I, however, feel that both the other two Gus Van Sant films you mention are far from 'dross' - I found them both affecting and deeply moving, especially Elephant. I thank God there are Directors around like Van Sant in these commercially cynical times at the box office. The fact any of his films these days can get Oscar recognition is just mind-blowing.

Oh, and the fact of Van Sant's own gayness might go some way to explaining his 'fixation' with gay themes and motifs in so much of his work - although until now he's always been conspicuously non-political about it.

Ginga wrote:The Academy giving Penn the award was a bloody fix, not least because they are indeed "homo lovin sons of guns". That's not to say he wasn't good but I'm always more inclined to go with an actor who creates something of their own, who goes by no real source material and who engages me most and that was Rourke.

Fair enough, but your suggestion that the Academy Award for Penn has more to do with it's gay-friendliness than Penn's own performance comes across a bit sour. I don't doubt Rourke is outstanding - but there can only be one winner in the end.

Just got up! After staying up to watch this! Pretty mixed about the show. I thought Hugh was hugely cringe worthy, yet I did enjoy some of song and dance numbers, specifically the Beyonce one. The thing that really stood out this year, for me, was the format. Bringing back 5 previous winners to present the acting awards was genius. When they were announcing the nominations, and praising each nominee's achievements it genuinely felt like everyone was a winner. It got quite emotional, and I hope they keep this up for future shows.

Not entirely satisfied with the Academy's choices for the night however, but I rarely ever am. I'm glad Kate won, after the SAG awards there was "Doubt", provided by the Actress in that very film. Despite my heart willing Mickey to win, my head is quite satisfied Penn won. I'm not a fan of the person, but the actor is talented and he deserved the win. Despite a very predictable speech from him, the sentiment behind it, and even just the aspect of him winning for that role, with what is happening currently in California, was poignant.

Utter, utter bollocks. She was mesmerising in both The Reader AND Revolutionary Road and should have had two Best Actress noms. That said, it was a very strong year for Best Actress - Streep was great, Jolie was terrific and Hathaway was a real surprise in Rachel Getting Married.

Bollocks. Revolutionary Road was strawberry floating horrible as a film and she was decent at best. If you thought she was 'mesmerising' then you didn't watch the same films I did. Streep or Jolie should have won.

Thank god I saw the same Revolutionary Road as HoC. I feel genuinely sorry for you, that you were unable to watch that same film.

Wait you think she chose to do a holocaust film because she thought that was the only way she could win an oscar?

I wouldn't feel sorry for me - I didn't like it all and I wasn't the only one. It's just a predictable, plain, lifeless sort of film - the best quote being that it's American Beauty without the laughs and for the majority of it I was sure I'd seen it before. But then I did see Little Children and it twigged. It's just a very unenjoyable experience.

Pretty much, aye. Considering she's been nominated five times for performances I enjoyed far more, I'd say hitting on one of the Academy's favourite topics is always a trusty tool in lining yourself up a Best Actress gong. But ho-hum, we're not all as cynical as I, so maybe it's just a story she really, really wanted to tell.

Yes.

"The namesh Bond. Jamesh Bond." - English

"I am Juan Shánchez Villalobosh Ramíresh, Chief metallurgisht to King Charlesh V of Shpain. And I'm at your shervish." - Spanish

"You wanna know how you do it? Here'sh how, they pull a knife, you pull a gun. He shends one of yoursh to the hoshpital, you shend one of hish to the morgue. That'sh the Chicago way, and that'sh how you get Capone! Now do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that?" - Irish

Three roles. Three nationalities. Yet all oh-so-strangely Scottish.

Not forgetting his turn as William of Baskervilla in The Name of the Rose, where he really should have had an Italian accent or at least....a less Scottish one.

As Sickboy said, The Name of the Rose was a highpoint for Sean.
