I don't think it was fake either, that would be far too crass.
They were watching a family collecting an award for their exceptionally talented dead son, and brother. That in itself is quite upsetting, so I can imagine being a family person, and being in that room watching the Ledger family accept the prize would be quite emotional.
Yes, it has been over a year now, but the whole thing is incredibly tragic.
