That's how you give an acceptance speech. Puts the boring gooseberry fool you hear at the Oscars to shame.

Considering she's been nominated five times for performances I enjoyed far more, I'd say hitting on one of the Academy's favourite topics is always a trusty tool in lining yourself up a Best Actress gong. But ho-hum, we're not all as cynical as I, so maybe it's just a story she really, really wanted to tell.

Glad that Slumdog won. It's not the kind of film that usually gets the nod. Think Penn was great in Milk but Rourke's turn was equally impressive and I find Penn; as good of an actor as he is, quite unlikeable so he wouldn't have been my choice. I haven't seen the Reader so I would of went with Jolie in Changeling which was the best performance of her career (which I thought was a excellent film and should of got a nod for best picture). Glad that Cruz and Leadger got awards too.

EDIT: Just noticed In Bruges didn't win best screenplay. Guess the academy are not too keen on midget jokes. Or they support Spurs.

Who cares...

Definitely should have won, but I guess that's just the way of the world. Happy Heath Ledger got his Oscar though, thoroughly deserved for a cracking performance.

Yes.

"The namesh Bond. Jamesh Bond." - English

"I am Juan Shánchez Villalobosh Ramíresh, Chief metallurgisht to King Charlesh V of Shpain. And I'm at your shervish." - Spanish

"You wanna know how you do it? Here'sh how, they pull a knife, you pull a gun. He shends one of yoursh to the hoshpital, you shend one of hish to the morgue. That'sh the Chicago way, and that'sh how you get Capone! Now do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that?" - Irish

Three roles. Three nationalities. Yet all oh-so-strangely Scottish.

Do you know why all his characters have Scottish accents?

Well, you know how he's very big on Scottish independence and all that jazz? Apparently, he says that he gives all his characters Scottish accents to heighten that identity.

Yeah, that's why. It's not because he can't do any other voices and lives in Switzerland to avoid taxes. Not at all.

I hear Ben Stiller did a little sketch of Joaquin Phoenix's appearance on that chat show.

Seemed to go right over his head, then. Poor Stiller, trying to take someone else's thing.

What "gooseberry fool" would that be, then? His family collecting the award?

No, just all the people in the crowd fake crying and trying to outsob each other. I found the Family stuff pretty touching, deffo hear the pain in his dads voice. The Only genuine face i could see in the crowd was Nolans.

Yeah, that's the problem with putting a load of actors in a room and sticking cameras on them. It's the same with all those "sincere" smiles when they lose. I'm not sure Angelina Jolie has even worked with Ledger, so I don't know why she looked on the verge of tears. S'pose she could have been genuinely upset, mind.

I do like Angelina Jolie, and not just for the obvious reasons. She's someone with a lot of integrity and a lot of passion for what she does - just like Ledger (I really liked her Inside The Actors' Studio gig) I think both of them are of similiar ilk and whether she was friends with him or not, I couldn't say but it's probably more to do with thinking about losing a real talent at such a young age and someone you respect. Personally, I was pretty gutted to hear that he had died and it was certainly a really horrible thing to feel - and that's just through me really liking the guy in the films I'd seen and interviews. He seemed like someone who was truly special.
So imagine if you did know him, even just a little - and the idea that he had hit a career high but never really got to reap the rewards. He basically pulled off the impossible by bettering what many would call a perfect perfomance by Nicholson the first time - then there's the little toddler he left behind.
Whatever way you cut it, it's a sad story and just like people getting emotional about a particular film, I wouldn't criticise anyone for feeling teary about Ledgar's acceptance ceremony, especially not on a night when emotions are running particularly high, anyway.

I don't think it was fake either, that would be far too crass.

They were watching a family collecting an award for their exceptionally talented dead son, and brother. That in itself is quite upsetting, so I can imagine being a family person, and being in that room watching the Ledger family accept the prize would be quite emotional.

Yes, it has been over a year now, but the whole thing is incredibly tragic.

Cock on, our kid. My wife was actually quite moved - she said "God, it's such a tragic waste".
