As soon as I read that part about Home being silver bullet and LBP planet being a huge title amongst casuals the article lost any credit I might have given it.

The PS3 is selling, slowly but surely... and to be honest, it annoys me. I've spoken to a few PS3 owners at work who've basically bought one not because of Little Big Planet or because they wanted a Blu-Ray media-center*, but simply because to the 360 because it's a Playstation, or that it's "newer" and therefore they believe it's technically superior.

But then, I work in a place with a high moron concentration, and who evidently believe that a 300 quid plus purchase is not one that merits any research.

*You know. Legitimate reasons one might choose to actually buy the machine.

A well timed price cut could destroy the PS3 2008 advantage in one month, the Jasper board which is cheaper is almost upon us and a hard drive that is now 3 times bigger is included at a price that Sony can't get near. US consumers are price sensitive like no other and the old 80% of PS2 sales were at $199 or less is what MS will be looking too.

The 360 did have a price cut in the US last month and despite this the (much more expensive) PS3 still sold more.

The big game that MS are relying on this year is Gears of War 2 and it is sure to sell huge numbers but I don't see it shifting that many consoles as all the Gears of War fans own a 360 already.

The point about the 20gb being cleared has been made. People said Halo 3 wouldn't sell machines as Halo fans would already have a 360, they were wrong. Gears 2 will sell hardware this Xmas no doubt and we all know about the sequel effect where the second game of big franchises tends to outsell the first and Gears did 5 million copies.

Gears 2 will raise the profile of that franchise and the Xbox 360 so will impact on hardware sales.

I think the stats/graphs in this Edge article demonstrate how the momentum has moved to the PS3 in 2008, and how the 360 has done so little this year.

It so needs more than just a price cut. The fact that a new motherboard is cited as a rescue remedy for the 360 goes to show what shitty straights it is already in.

At least the 360 was up and running before problems started to show. Sony shot themselves in the foot at least a year before the PS3 was even released. ;)

The graph shows that 360 sales are up on the same period last year.

Are we looking at the same graph because it seems to show MS leading massively for the holiday period, followed by a short lead by Sony in a less important part of the year that has now more than halfed since it started.

Nintendo seems to have proved that the summer drought need not be.

I think we're all looking at the same graph, some people are reading things into it that simply aren't there.

Like look at the last two months of 360/PS3 and explain which way the "momentum" is going.

The other pics probably show it better:

Judoscar said that the momentum has shifted to the PS3 in 2008 and the 360 has done little this year, which is true as the PS3 has doubled it's sales compared to one year ago. It has gone from being quite far behind the 360 to slightly ahead, and the 360 hasn't really increased much at all compared to last year.

Well the fat lady and all that. MS definetly need to push some more 1st party exclusives as Sony seem to be making this their priority yet saying that it has had no real big exclusives this year and it is still doing ok. The PS3 has caught up on a month to month sales which it had to, but has only surpassed 360 sales by any great margin when big titles have been released and the figures show that it does not last for long. MS have to make a big fuss over the update to the OS as if they are not making a proper hardware revision as this would spark a lot more interest in sales. The PS3 is bound to get more momentum as it moves into its 2nd to 3rd cycle games and finally we are seeing some decent titles and more established franchises finding their place on the system. I do think too much hope is being made of LBP though to be a system seller I just dont think the mass buying public are going to give a gooseberry fool about it as the continued Wii dominance shows what they like. Overall Xmas is going to be interesting to see how the land lies between 360 and PS3 as for the Wii its not even in the same league as the other two any more it;s so far ahead it can never fail.

It's cocktail time!. Then again when isn't it.

I don't think much should be put by any figures until we have passed the end of the year. More than half of all games are sold in Nov/Dec, so outside of that blips and bumps caused by a small number of releases are a common occurence. You only get a really good picture of how the year has progressed in January.

Yeah. Why stop at Summer when you can have a drought pretty much all year!

You may think there aren't any games out on the Wii, but the general public obviously disagree as it is killing the other 2 in sales.

OH NO!! THAT MEANS MY 360 AND ALL MY GAMES AND ALL ITS FUTURE GAMES ARE NOW WORTHLESS AND UNPLAYABLE!!

Exactly.

Does this mean that I'm going to be suddenly deprived of games to play on my Xbox? No.

Does this mean that my gaming is going to feel suddenly hollow and shallow because sales figures for my particular console are down? No.

Does it actually have no baring on anything in my gaming life and mean only a tiny bit more than jack gooseberry fool to anyone other than Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony themselves (all of whom aren't exactly going south in their support anytime soon)? Yes.

Why worry about sales figures at all this gen? We're not exactly in Dreamcast territory here, where sales means the console itself might get canned prematurely. We've all got good games to play on everything without this constant navel-gazing. Competition's a good thing for us, the consumers, so let's enjoy it. :D
