Seems like the right place to put this.

Cancelled GoldenEye 007 XBLA remaster fully revealed in 2-hour gameplay video

Rare's cancelled Xbox Live Arcade remaster of its seminal N64 shooter GoldenEye 007 has been revealed in its entirety with a two-hour playthrough video.

The video below, published on the YouTube channel of GoldenEye 007 content creator Graslu00 (via GoldenEye Dossier), shows the full game played on the OO Agent difficulty in 4k resolution and 60 frames-per-second, with 30 minutes of multiplayer at the end. The footage shows GoldenEye 007 XBLA running on an emulator to achieve the higher resolution.

I remember reading all about its existence for the first time in Xbox World 360 magazine. Microsoft and Activison were up for its release, Nintendo apparently weren’t, so that was sadly the end of that.

The person who captured this latest footage said the following with respect to its cancelling:

How do you feel about Nintendo cancelling this remake?

-Nintendo did not cancel this, they're not the owners of the license. If you want GE back, ask the IP holders, not gaming companies.

I would imagine they don't really know what they're talking about though

Every report I’ve read, and who knows if this is entirely accurate either, said Microsoft couldn't reach a licensing agreement with Nintendo - who still owned the publishing rights, but not the Bond license itself - as Nintendo wanted a continued cut of the revenue and a release on their platforms, whereas Microsoft wanted to pay a one-off fee, though were apparently happy for it to appear on Nintendo hardware too.

Maybe there was also something to Nintendo not wanting the inferior version on their system too.

It’s a shame, because the hurdles to getting it remade were a lot less than, say, a WWF No Mercy or Project Gotham Racing. Or games like Crazy Taxi, which have had to have things removed entirely in later versions.

Released in the same year as MMMbop, Candle in the Wind and Wannabe. Definitely not in the category of modern!

I thought it was a bit rubbish too when I played it all those years ago.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

Didn't the 360 World article lay the blame directly on Iwata's doorstep? Far as I recall it said everyone was onboard before he turned around and just said no.

Yeah plenty of reports have placed the blame at Nintendo's door, though I don't think it's ever been particularly clear how much evidence anyone actually has for it

They used so much of the HUD and UI in Timesplitters.

I recall rumours of the Xbox version flying around but I hadn't realised that it had actually been coded.

Maybe nostalgia plays a part but, to me, it still looks and sounds good!

I was really disappointed when this got cancelled. I still wait in hope that all parties will agree on this release someday.

I don't even see why this is an issue anymore, Nintendo and Xbox have been getting along swimmingly, and everyone stands to profit. It's a no brainer.

That largely looks complete. Such a shame.

This, also controls like trying to steer a drunk pig. One of the most overrated games ever, up there with Ocarina of Time.

I was lucky enough to have friends who owned high end PCs and consoles back in '97. Going from Quake 1 & 2 on a PC to Goldeneye was not easy. Even our third hand 386 PC could play Descent. I've never seen the appeal of Goldeneye.

Even as a PC gamer with the likes of Quake 2 and Unreal I could still see the appeal of Goldeneye and I had a great time playing it with friends. I don't think it has aged especially well but I'll always have fond memories of it

I too had a PC and N64 back in the day and GoldenEye was a revelation. It controls terribly now, but it was a revelation back in the day, even when compared to Quake.

Thankfully were it to be released now, much like Duke Nukem, Doom, and Perfect Dark, the controls would be adapted for modern pads.

I played through Goldeneye last year and enjoyed it a lot. Part of that was probably nostalgia, but it's still a good game. Controls and visuals are the elements that don't necessarily age well, and they are easily remedied via emulation. Presumably the only issue with the XBLA version is/was licensing? Not sure how it would work, but presumably the licence holder would take issue, or demand a cut, or something. Seems a shame though, online multiplayer and the chance to play through with better controls and visuals would've been great.
