"night" is not a fixed period but depends when sunset and sunrise are therefore "the middle of the night" will vary depending on the time of year. :capnscotty:

Depends on the game I'm playing. Pretty sure Pokemon SIlver is 6am-5:59pm is day and 6pm - 5:59am is night. and that's how I work :slol:

Yes, correct.

No. :capnscotty:

It’s when there are most hours of darkness coinciding with when most people are asleep, but should also mark the end if the day so needs to begin at 12am. So even in the summer months, 4am is the middle of the night even if it isn’t dark. This is what I’ve decided.

I can't seem to bring myself to watch old B&W films, there's just something about them that puts me off.

On the one hand, midnight is clearly "the middle of the night" in some sense. But that requires "night-time" to begin at sunset and I'm not sure that's how the phrase is really used. There is a whole period of "evening", which in winter is after sunset, but isn't night-time yet.

So in practice, I don't think you would wake up at midnight and think "ugh, it's the middle of the night". It would still feel like quite close to the start of the night. Night-time IMO begins when most people are sleep. That's got to be around midnight, surely. And it clearly ends at 5am, which is the earliest you could wake up for work without being considered to have to "get up during the night". No-one would say getting up at 4am is a normal morning routine, whereas a start around 5ish isn't unheard of (it's still painfully early but it's within the bounds of what you might consider an "early start").

Therefore, the middle of the night is in-between midnight and 5am, which is 2.30am. But really you'd give it an hour each way, so maybe 1.30am to 3.30am is the middle-of-the-night-timespan.

That's a lot more legwork than I was willing to do, but I agree with Karl. 1:30-3:30 is the middle of the night.

I mean, 1am-4am is clearly the middle of the night.

1am-4am are the "wee hours", which is slightly different to "the middle of the night". If I go to bed at 1am, that's clearly "going to bed late", but it's not "staying up 'til the middle of the night" like going to bed at 2am would be.

Likewise, going to bed at 4am is a bit hard to classify, but IMO it's closer to "staying up all night" than it is to "staying up 'til the middle of the night", in a way that going to bed at 3am just isn't.

Top answer on a Google search says:

Night is from 00:00-06:00. So the middle of the night is at 03:00, but midnight is at 00:00, opposing midday (aka noon) at 12:00.

That’s strawberry floating stupid though, night definitely starts before 00:00.

I feel "staying up all night" requires you to actually go to bed in the morning, so from 6am.

3am is the middle of the night. 12pm is the middle of the day. The hours between 6pm and 12am are therefore neither night or day, but daght.

The real point of note being missed here is that night can refer to two distinct periods of time. The first is as the opposite of day aka the period of darkness in any 24 hours. The second is the final quarter of a day as divided into morning, afternoon, evening and night. The first sense of night, as the opposite of day, is where we get "midday" and "midnight" from, approximating solar midday and midnight (the sun at its zenith and nadir). When we talk about "the middle of the night", we are usually using night in the second sense, as the final quarter of the day, which is between 12am and 6am. That puts "the middle of the night" in the common vernacular at 3am.

Evening can take place entirely during the day, entirely during the night, or (as is usual) span the two, depending on the time of sunset.

When did we all turn into pagans and start using the position of the sun to decide things?

Do higher latitudes simply not have night at all for much of the year? Is that what we're saying?

Middle of the night to me is just whatever time I'm supposed to be asleep but for some reason I'm not.

"Oh ruddy hell, why am I doing this thing now — it's the middle of the flipping night!"

Pah, as if the position of the sun is worth paying attention to!

I DECIDE WHEN IT IS NIGHT!
