Bungie and Activision are splitting up, an industry-shaking divorce that will see Destiny enter fully into Bungie’s control.

This development comes after years of tension between the two companies—tension that has existed since before the first Destiny even shipped. Bungie told employees during a team meeting this afternoon, framing it as fantastic news for a studio that has long grown sick of dealing with its publisher.

Well no strawberry floating surprise.

Look at what Activision did to the original Infinity Ward? The warning bells was there. I’m sure we aren’t the only one that told them “we did warn you.”

Anyway good news that Bungie got out before Activision gooseberry fools them down.

Better for Bungie in the long run, imagine if Microsoft come out next E3 and announce they bought them :slol:

Finally, after 8+ years. Apparently they're self-publishing now.

Not surprised. If I was Activision I'd be wondering what the strawberry float Bungie were playing at with the massive regression from Destiny 1 year 3 to Destiny 2 and spending a year and a half fixing it.

It'll be interesting to see how the next one turns out.

Be interesting to see how they get on without Activision-owned High Moon Studios or Vicarious Visions. Those two studios helped out a lot with Destiny 2, particularly all the DLCs and they played a big part in making the game better after Curse of Osiris.

As I said in the Destiny thread. I think the franchise is beyond repair at this point. I don't see Destiny 3 being a success. They would be better off coming up with a new IP and cutting their losses.

No reason to not believe that when he's been bang on about every single Destiny rumour.

It was Luke Smith's decision yes, but no choices are made in a vacuum. We don't know what metrics he was attempting to hit while making such decisions, nor what the terms were of the agreement with Activision. It's naive to see Bungie as nothing but a plucky underdog making games purely for fun, but I think everyone can agree that Activision are the worst of the two when it comes to shady money making.

If Schreier himself is excited, I think fans of the game ought to be also.

captain red dog wrote:strawberry float Destiny 3. I think the franchise is too badly soiled. Bungie should drop it and come up with something less generic.

And yeah, this is absolute nonsense. I had no loyalty or history with the series until a few months back and went in during the base-game giveaway expecting to play the campaign and leave. I've since played almost 200 hours based off nothing but how enjoyable it is in its current state. Yes Bungie strawberry floated up the launch, yes the first two expansions were disappointments, but Forsaken essentially WAS Destiny 3 and became one of my favourite games of the past few years.

Also, please redefine your definition of 'generic.'

'Beyond repair' here apparently meaning 'one of the biggest cash generators in the games industry.'

This is good news I think. As mentioned in the Videogames Bigger than Movies/Music thread, Activision is currently devouring itself at an incredible rate to appeal to shareholders and profit margins so, similar to their deal with Microsoft, leaving is a canny decision on Bungie's part.

I guess we'll see how much this actually affects their games come D3 but I'm excited.

Couldn’t agree more. Having played destiny 1 years 1 and 2, and Destiny 2 up to this point, I’m far more interested and invested in the game than I have ever been. Forsaken is brilliant.

People at Blizzard will be all "Wait, leaving was an option?!" or "See? I told you we should have just left!"

Blizzard are a sub of Activision where as Bungie were just in a publishing deal which they've exited slightly early with IP rights for their game. Blizzard are stuck.
