Hello!

Do you know much about Blu-ray players? If so, maybe you could please help me?

Don't you have a PS4, jawa? The Blu-Ray player on that should be better spec than an early generation player.

Oooh... I've never liked running film discs on my game machines! Also, my PS4 is in my tiny games room whilst I need a Blu-ray player for my living room TV.

Buy a second PS4

I'm afraid I can't help you out with your new-fangled technology Jawa as I have never made the switch to Blu-ray.

I've got that set up in the bedroom for Blu-rays and Netflix/Amazon.

Don't you have a PS4 and a PS4 Pro?

I've got a UHD bluray player which isn't very old and it's still got disc loading times. Granted it's only a £300 one and nothing top of the range, so maybe those are better but it's still there.

I play my blu rays on the PS4 and they load really quickly.

The delays you experience is probably due to it being a 1.1 spec player.

Love blu ray, t'is my favourite format.

I bought one of these new dangled devices. A good one, Philips or Panasonic, can’t remember which. Now every time I want to buy a film it costs me a gooseberry fool load more for pretty much the same experience I would have had with DVD. Absolutely bargain. (Facepalm, stupid still...)

Weirdly, PS4 doesn't play 4k blu ray despite Sony being involved with the development of blu ray.

Xbone does which is even stranger. Its cheaper than many 4k blu ray players too.

I am not a fan of playing DVD / Blu-Ray discs on consoles 'cos I don't like the fan noise that you often get. Judging by your experiences, Ad, it seems that newer players take a while to run Blu-ray discs too. I had wondered if my one was a bit slow but perhaps it's something that is common to most players. I'll stick with it at the moment :-).

The fan noise is horrendous on PS3 and PS4. I kind of regret selling my blu-ray player (I won it in a raffle) for £100 because it was easily flashed with Australian firmware to make it region free, it's so bad.

I actually use a PC now just to play DVDs because I can build better thermal performance than Sony.

The speed of your drive is likely quite low. Actually so was the original PS3, I think only 2x.

A newer player should normally have faster drive, so you want to check specs. But generally there is slowless associated with older solid state memory, embedded systems/microcontrollers etc. The most expensive part at that time by far would have been the laser. Things have changed. The slowness was likely due to cost to market. There was maybe a kind of design flaw in early blu ray drives because the assumption is with higher data density you don't need the disk to spin fast because you can seek more data in less time. It didn't really work out that way so blu-ray drives were noticeably slower than 16-20x DVD drives, I think. There were a couple of comparisons with slow load times on the PS3 vs 360 as well, the latter of course using a standard dual layer DVD drive (or maybe it was Sony/devs insisting on using uncompressed assets for everything).

I don't actually notice the fan noise when playing my blu rays on PS4, but then i use headphones anyways as there's usually a lot worse ambient noise around when i'm trying to watch stuff, such as the street outside which can be like a zoo.

Does anyone watch Blu-rays on their PS4? I wouldn't have thought it very taxing and therefore not have too much fan. I've watched stuff from Channel 4 via the 4OD app and I don't remember the fan kicking in.

My PS4 is extremely noisy and one of the reasons I never use it (only got it to play the last of us and uncharted) I play blu rays on my Xbox One X and that’s silent

I also have a old BR player and it too is slow. Very annoying indeed! (I also can't quite figure out how its continued playback memory works.)

This thread made me attempt a search for fast loading BR players and the results were not great :/ I can see questions being asked years ago as to why BR players are so slow, but anything more recent and its just about the best rated BR player for 2018, etc. No one cares about fast loading players! And then I found one which sacrifices streaming apps, etc to keep boot-up time as fast as possible. And costs over £600

It may be the case that ps4 and Xbox is the only justifiable use case in terms of cost effectiveness to include a fast drive, which is surprising but understandable. And of course you have massive and fast memory to go along with it. I not familiar with the specs, I don't even have one.
