Fed up talking videogames? Why?

As far as I'm concerned a PlayStation/Xbox is the only box you need under your TV.

Amazon, Netflix, NowTV, Youtube, Blu-ray and, of course, games.

What else do you need?

I can't say I've ever noticed the fan on any of my consoles when playing a dvd.

Maybe I'm just easily pleased but the only time I notice the fan is during long gaming sessions in the summer. I'm pretty sure the consoles are designed so that they only use enough power at the time to make the DVD player work so it's working much less hard than when gaming so should in theory be less loud.

Oddly enough PS2 was one of the cheapest DVD players you could buy during most of its lifespan.

I'm really surprised that most people in the developed world don't have at least one modern games console in their house.

The only time I turn my TV on is when the PS4 is on (unless I'm watching live sports).

My PS4 (launch model) is noisy as strawberry float, whether gaming or watching Netflix it is horrendous. I dread to think how loud it would be if I was using a disc in it. :dread:

The noise factor varies based in on all kinds of conditions, anecdotes don't really mean anything.

But the original PS3 is hilarious and yes the Cell runs so incredibly hot the fan is in max within moments of turning the thing on nevermind playing a DVD or a PS3 game. The thermal performance is fundamentally flawed. The noise floor is comparable to passing traffic.

Only had a problem with the launch 360 in terms of noise. Apart from that, they’ve all been fine. Guess it depends on your sound system and how close you are to the machine.

It’s like the Sky+ Box. If you turn everything off you can hear the HDD spinning away, but can’t hear it over the TV or anything like that.

In terms of Blu Ray players, PS3, 4, Xbox S and X are all fine. Only criticism I’ve read is that the 4K capabilities of the S are a bit poor, but the X is excellent.

You mean you have an early PS4 which still works? I had mine a year only for the touch sensitive buttons to stop working and the disc drive subsequently went haywire.

Replaced it (thankfully for free thanks to argos as it was still under guarantee) with a 1200 series model with proper clicky buttons on the front.

I don’t ever use the buttons and very rarely use discs.

I have an original white PS4 (purchased days after you posted photos of the one you purchased) it’s rarely on (don’t think it’s been on this year) and it is really noisy a bit like a jet taking off, it will be in use again for the last of us 2, I don’t attempt to press the silly eject senor buttons and just do it via the controller

I had the same issue so replacement was within the first year. When I'm watching All4 on it just a very slight hum that I can only hear when I turn the sound on the TV off. Certain games throw the fan into overdrive but just watching TV is fine, not tried watching a Blu-ray on it though.

My replacement is still the touch sensitive model.

Yes?

It's funny that's supposedly an issue with launch PS4s because my original PS3 (originally Knoyleo's in fact) still has all working buttons.. but it was flipping expensive in the first place.

It's just insanely loud, the loudest piece of consumer electronics I've ever used. There's a fix (Sony just massively fluffed up the thermal compound) but it risks slicing through the Cell CPU itself which means bye bye console and everything on it. Not just a simple case of removing the fan, but the actual cover for the CPU itself to access the silicone underneath that.

It's a minor miracle it still works as remember this was the day of RRODs and YLODs so most of them have died. It's super cool being able to play PS1 disks from 1995 on an HDTV and wireless controller though.

I have an OG PS3 downstairs that I use as a blue ray player even though I have a OG ps4 in the cupboard of gaming shame where old consoles live. I just can't be bothered to move the PS3 and it works fine.

All ps3s can do that- or did you mean ps2 games?

The amount of ps3s me and the wife have been through. :dread: I think I had 3 fat 40gb models ylod on me and my current slim model sounds like a hairdryer on full beans when it's doing nothing in particular, and my wife had two 40gb models ylod and we have another in the loft which I don't even know if it still works.

Quality products yet again from Sony, they really do make gooseberry fool electronics

I had the YLOD on my first PS3, my second was the slim model though.

The original 60GB launch model includes the ps2 chipset (which itself was backwards compatible with PS1) so it can play pretty much all PS1 and PS2 games.

All PS3s can play some PS1 games, but most of them use software emulation. Most PS3s bar just 2 the launch versions are NOT compatible with PS2 games at all.

https://support.us.playstation.com/arti ... yStation-3

They took the chipset out because it was just too damn expensive. And PS2 is really hard to emulate.

Well you play a PS1 game on the slim models it just uses the same emulation as the download versions.

I'm yet to find a PSone game that doesn't work on the PS3 Slim. I've got it hooked up to a 21'' HDTV and it feels like the perfect size for PSone games. The PS3 also comes with the same texture smoothing capabilities as the PS2. Some games released from late 2000 onwards were designed to play better on the PS2 than PS1 (Driver 2 being the most obvious) and the PS3 Slim surprisingly takes advantage of this as well. Even all the old demo discs play without a hitch. It'll also play the hidden or excess audio that makes it onto a number of discs if you play it as a music CD.

These last few days I have been contemplating buying an Xbox One S primarily for the Blu Ray capabilities. The discounting has put it with almost price parity with the Sony UBPX700B, effectively getting a games console thrown in for free. I've read a number of people saying both Xbox's struggle with playing Blue Planet II though, which is the main one I want to watch - it's not in 4K on iTunes either.

Well I'll be sure to pick up a PS3 slim when my huge blaringly loud, huffy puffy phat model finally dies.

Up til January I had a launch model PS4. Played discs all the time and never had an issue with it being noisy.
