I use the TP link adaptors and the wiring in my house is terrible. Upstairs and downstairs are definitely on different ring mains.
What I did find though with all the ones I tried is that they occasionally drop connection to each other and need rebooting.
To reduce/fix this, I had to set up a second router downstairs (I had an old one) and set up a small script on my PC (which is directly connected to my 'active' ADSL router) to ping this dummy router all the time. This kept the link up and stopped it from falling asleep somehow.

I'm confused, isn't the whole point of powerline adapters to get reliable connections between floors?

I bought powerline adapters last year however they offered no real improvement in speed and cut out constantly. In end I just pulled the ancient wifi-card from my pc and bought a USB wifi adapter running on the most recent version of 802.11.

Obviously the ideal is to have end-to-end ethernet. When I eventually own my own home I will be able to pull up floor boards and stuff to make it happen but for now there is no obvious alternative.

It depends on what the electric lines are like in your house. Sometimes it can be really bad/unreliable for ethernet connections.

The powerlines arrived today. No issues whatsoever running both up and downstairs, and the pc internet connection is now almost 3 times faster thanks to being wired.

Tried steamlink and it's gone from being unusable to streaming 4k at beautiful settings with no input lag. :datass:

Very very happy :toot:
