Relic has through many masterpieces developed a peculiar unique sub genre of RTS. We have seen amazing features in their past games, such as:

-the cover system
-morale system
-supression
-garrisonable buildings
-veterancy
-retreating
-fully destructible enviroment, including the ground
-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sync kills

and I'm sure I forgot some.

NONE OF THE ABOVE FEATURES ARE IN THIS GAME!!! NONE! 0! NULL!

But it's so pretty. And has small titans.

Was about to press the buy button for AoE2:HD this morning but decided to watch some videos of it on youtube before letting my nostalgia get the better of me. Glad I did, graphically it really shows its age and I think I'm going to end up playing a few times, get bored and then wish I'd bought the Extended Edition of Rise of Nations instead.

In fact, I might just buy that this evening, always been a RoN fan

Glad I hadn't pulled the trigger on using that 50%off voucher Steam sent me. Still £20 after that.

I'm still tempted to pull on mine, although it expires before payday so I doubt I'll use it.

I hope my new laptop will be able to handle it. And also that it's good. Being good would be a good first start.

I want to get excited, but Age 2 was perfection so I can't see it being bettered. Unless it is like BFME.

Reminds me of when Command & Conquer moved to 3D with Generals (was it that? My memory is shoddy)

Reviews

IGN - 8

Age of Empires 4 plays it safe a bit too often, but really excels when it wanders outside of its very traditional comfort zone. The expansive campaigns and offbeat factions like the Mongols and the Rus are major highlights, even when it loses some of its sharpness to a small unit cap, frustrating pathfinding, and relatively unimpressive graphics for a 2021 game. I've been enjoying it a lot as a whole, but it also sometimes makes me question how much room I have in my life for this age-old formula these days, when real-time strategy has come such a long way thanks to the innovations of other franchises.

Gameinformer - 8.25

The real-time strategy genre remains relevant, fueled by a few big titles once in a while. While Age of Empires IV lacks any ambition to even gently jostle the standards set by Age of Empires II decades earlier, it’s a good way to play a classic-feeling RTS today with some slick polish and panache.

Windows Central - 5 out of 5

Age of Empires 4 builds greatly on the series' reputation that began in 1997. If you're a fan of RTS games, world history, or both, this should be an easy recommendation. With dozens of hours of campaign play, eight unique civilizations, hours of live docu-style video segments, and a ton of maps for skirmishes, there's no shortage of well-polished content to enjoy. Get it on its own or enjoy it through a subscription to Xbox Game Pass for PC.

VG247 - 4 out of 5

Age of Empires 4 is as multifaceted as the events it depicts. It’s more ambitious than other AoE games in handling its content and inspirations, but also far more reserved in changing the fundamentals. There’s no need to change what works already, though a few additional gameplay flourishes could have helped AoE 4 feel more fresh and exciting. The campaigns are robust, but the missing content stands out in its absence. That’s especially true considering Age of Empires 4 is a full-priced release, though being on Game Pass makes it a more appealing prospect. What’s here is still more than enough to be getting on with, but lIke any good strategist, World’s Edge is planning ahead for the long game.

Gamesradar - 5 out of 5

Age of Empires 4 is a game that I know I'm still going to be playing months and even years from now, and not just because developer Relic has said it wants to expand the number of civilizations in the future. There's so much depth in the gameplay, so many tactics to experiment with, so many weird scenarios I can build for myself in Skirmish mode, that it's hard to imagine ever getting bored of it. History, carnage, and teeny weeny elephants, Age of Empires 4 has it all.
