PostAlbum Club 2019 : IDLES - JOY AS AN ACT OF RESISTANCE
by more heat than light » Sun Sep 15, 2019 12:02 pm

Hello all and welcome to Album Club, the fun game of shared musical critique. Every week one member of the group will select an album for the group to listen to, and every other member will share their thoughts and opinions. This year's club is slightly different as I will be co-running it both here on GRcade and with my IRL friends on Facebook. Both groups will be reviewing the same record, so we should get some good and diverse opinions.

The Facebook group can be found here. https://www.facebook.com/groups/385430472142340/

Rules:

1. The most important rule of all, please be considerate in your views. Music is a very personal thing, and being overtly critical can be massively unhelpful. Please consider using constructive criticism rather than just dismissing the music. 'It's not really my thing' is better than 'this is garbage'.
2. We don't ask for essays, but please try to make a bit of effort with reviews. Things you like, things you don't, favourite tracks, how the album hangs together as a whole, similar things you prefer etc. A couple of paragraphs should be a minimum. A score is not necessary at all, but feel free to add one if you like.
3. Please try to give the album at least a couple of listens during the week before you post. I know this is hard work sometimes. :P
4. A new album chooser will be selected AT RANDOM from all those who have posted reviews for all previous records. This will hopefully ensure a healthy participation. If you have had your choice already please continue to contribute, after all the club only works if everyone gets involved.
5. Albums can be selected from any musical genre but please make sure they are available at the regular streaming sites (especially Spotify, which seems to be where the majority will be listening). Try to consider that this is for people to listen to over the course of a week, so an epic spectacular double album might not necessarily be appropriate for this club.
6. The 1975 are banned from the club.

I will be posting the first record tomorrow morning for the club, see you all then! :)

I'll be more than happy to join in, I'm quite open to any tunes. However, from my end I'm not sure there will be many Mayhem fans in here.

I am really disappointed that the first rule isn't 'You dont talk about Music Club'.

I'll join even though you got the rules wrong ;)

Ok, here we go!

Album 1 : dEUS- The Ideal Crash

Image

https://open.spotify.com/album/0C5TAbNX ... 7SQhrWUWAg

After much deliberation I finally decided to go with this 1999 gem from Belgian rockers dEUS (their styling, not mine). I picked this one because it occupies a space in a band's career that I really seem to like, that being the transition between arty noodling and mainstream success (or vice versa). This crossover point is often somewhere where I seem to find a lot of great records, the obvious example being Radiohead's OK Computer, but also things like Blur's eponymous comeback album, I'm Wide Awake It's Morning by Bright Eyes or Biffy Clyro's Puzzle. This album tones down the weirdness of their first two records with a deliberate lurch towards airplay friendly tunes, but something slightly off-kilter about the music remains that I really like.

Plus it also contains Instant Street, which would make a top ten of my favourite 90's songs ever. It's that good.

NB - The version of the album I've linked here is the 20th Anniversary Edition, which I've picked because of the smart remaster. There's obviously no need to go digging through all the B-sides and live tracks. The album is ten songs long, and closes with 'Dream Sequence #1'.

Its on Amazon music too btw, not the remastered version though.

Going to listen to it shortly.

Edit: I kind of like it, its like a more chilled out blend of Kasabian, The Cooper Temple Clause and Blur (last track oddly reminds me of the outro of Beetlebum) and several other 90's indie bands.

I'll have another listen before I do a mini review of it.

I have to flag a conflict of interest with dEUS. I know one of the guys in the band.

He is an absolute strawberry float nugget. Highest order strawberry float nugget at that.

Having said that, I quite like the title track.

Wardie, he was my mate from way back in the day. I'd been seeing this girl very briefly when we all went clubbing in Glasgow one night, with a view to going to a party afterwards. She told me it wasn't working out. I went to the toilet, came back and she and Wardie were tongue wrestling. Still went to the party, where I found this huge lump of resin on the hallway floor. I made him eat it with the words "Eat it. Eat it all. "

About 3 months later I strawberry floated his little sister.

Then he strawberry floated off to Europe.

Next time I saw him was when dEUS were supporting Placebo at the Arches. He totally dingied me.

I last saw him about 8 years ago playing with Clean Kitchen/happy kitchen in a crappy pub basement in Dalston or Shoreditch or somewhere like that. He was fat, balding, bitter and his band were gooseberry fool.

I've only had a chance to listen to the opening track so far, going to try and listen to the rest later and post my thoughts.

I want to give it a fair shake before presenting a verdict but I wasn't a big fan of the opener, it didn't really go anywhere. I feel like an opening track should grab you and let you know what you're in for.

"He's a strawberry float nugget of the highest order!"

"Why?"

"He pulled a girl I barely knew!"

"Oh, is that it?"

"No! I also forced drugs down his throat and strawberry floated his sister before he went on tour in Europe!"

"Sounds more like you...."

"And the banana split is now bald!!!"

Oh, I know I'm a banana split. But we aren't listening to an album that I co-wrote.

I wasn’t calling you a banana split, I was just laughing at the story of mates falling out over basically nothing.

To be honest with you, we didn't fall out over the girl, or me making him eat all the hash (I'd already eaten half of it). Bros before hoes and all that. Sleeping with his sister didn't make us fall out. She fancied me and he set it up one night when again we were all clubbing. I went to the toilet, only to come out and find out that everyone had strawberry floated off home except her. What could a gentleman do except ask if she wanted to come back to mine.

After this we arranged to go to a kibbutz for a few months. I phoned his dad one day, to find out he strawberry floated off with his guitar and was busking around Europe.

Never saw him again until the night he was supporting Placebo.

Where he blanked me.

And that is why he is a nuclear grade strawberry float nugget.
