Is Kyoto about Ryan Adams? Fantastic songwriting regardless.

I too listened to it for the first time off the back of this thread and thought it was excellent.

I've always presumed it's about her relationship with her dad, but I like leaving meaning of lyrics open to interpretation.

Yeah, both would fit really. Either way, brilliantly written song, love the lyrics to it.

So they've gone from being crap, to being a slightly different variant of crap?

That was one of my album club picks a few years back.

Hadn't come across them before, no wet flannels here, going to give them a proper listen. :toot:

Film club sadly didn't get going (not sure if I killed it:( ) but I'd be up for a Wet Flannel Album Club

If you recall, my first foray into the thread noted that no artist I like had put out an album in 2020 that I was aware of. So no I hadn't.

I then listened to a couple of tracks each from five albums that another user posted to see if I liked any of them, which I didn't.

That part of my post might have had just a sliver of sarcasm to it, with the mention of a meme that is old as houses around here

Absolutely gotten to. But I will give your top five a listen. I'll also give Turing Machine a go (no idea if they were in your top five but I can see a couple of people liked it)

Not sure about Kyoto, but Motion Sickness from her debut is 100% about Ryan Adams.

Alfredo
1985 - Really love the Clapton-esque slow wailing tune. Didn't really like the vocals, they seem way too rushed and in total contrast to the music

God is Perfect - This is a better match, nice beats, though at times I cannot follow these lyrics, the lyrical content from what I do get seems very cliche for the genre which is a shame

Unlocked
Take it Back V2 - "little brother, don't make me reach out and touch ya" had me howling  that said this is probably the most enjoyable track I've listened to courtesy of GR today. I like the different vocal depths

Lay Up - Little drony, kind of uninteresting in comparison to the previous track

From King to A GOD
From King - In terms of rapping, this is my favourite so far, lyrics don't drag or go too fast to where I can't understand them. Backing music and beats is a little lazy, but overall this is a solid 6/10. Nice WCW commentary

Fear of God - I like this, it's in my kind of groove. I could see myself giving the full album a shot. Good job he made it into your top five because "strawberry float your top five if it ain't me"

how I'm feeling now
pink diamond - there's something good here, but its not my bag

forever - same as above I guess

The Price of Tea in China
Carruth - Rapping is ok but elevator music in the background really jarred me

Giant Slide - liked the haunting high pitched bit looping in the background. Solid track, some decent lyrics too

Listened to less new albums than I did in the last couple of years, but there's a few I can talk about in no particular order.

I think album of the year for me is Spirit World Field Guide by Aesop Rock; generally whenever he releases something it makes my end of year list.

Alfredo by Freddie Gibbs and the Alchemist was also pretty good but imo not on the level of Gibb's previous collaboration with Madlib.

I wanna shout out Only for Dolphins by Action Bronson; not really album of the year material but I gotta congratulate Action for making a genuinely good album finally.

Lastly I'll mention two more albums; Streams of Thought 3 by Black Thought, not much to say other than dude just keeps making strawberry floating hits; and RTJ 4, which I have the same opinion on.

There's other gooseberry fool I need to catch up on, some more hip hop stuff and a vertiable sea of trap, but I doubt I'll have much of anything to say about those.

The Lost Art of Longing by BT.

More cutting edge EDM from the man who invented the term for electronic music. Absolutely brilliant album from start to finish.

Special mention for the You're Not Alone EP by Semisonic. First new material in 20 years and I feel like I'm 15 again listening to it.

Apparently RATM released a live album this year, so I guess I could recommend that?

Further to my one album answer from The Cribs, it's not on the album but they also released a Christmas song this month so that's the other bit of new music I've been listening to

I'm sure Drummy will unreservedly love it
