The current run of World's Finest is also by Mark Waid, and is very good too. A bit more light than Birthright too.
Mark Waid has written a lot for DC over the years, but check out JLA: Tower of Babel by him as well.

Nimrod and Orchis murdered loads of people at the Hellfire Gala. They announced that all mutants had to leave Earth or they would start killing random human civillians. 1 human for the first mutant found on Earth, 100 for the second mutant on Earth and so on. Xavier telepathically compelled every mutant to flee to Mars because of course he did. He's lucky Magneto's dead.
