There's a huge difference in clarity. The screen is so, so much better. The blacks are more grey which kind of sucks in some cases but apparantly there's some software things you can change to make it better.

It's way more comfortable as well and I don't even have my elite battery strap yet. That should be coming between the 24th and 29th according to Amazon!

General question for all you fellow VR users - what adds to the immersion the most for you?

I always consider it to be having hands / hand tracking to equivilant of hands in a game, but playing Resi 7 on PSVR last night (which uses DS4), it has reminded me how much real time shadows and reflections play a part. These are things that typically dont feature on Quest, and i think it has a bigger impact to immersion than i perhaps realised previously. PSVR has a horrendously low resolution, but not once did i stop and lament that fact.

I think that, for me, it's a few things, kaz. I like being able to "look around" at things; from a seated position, I enjoy admiring the wee details in games like Astro Bot and Moss. I think that using the Move controllers can add to the immersion (although I've barely used mine as I don't have the space)... but the standard controller can be just as effective when used well (i.e. as in Astro Bot!). Atmosphere and pacing help, too; in Ocean Dive, the shark is all the more effective due to the way suspense is built beforehand.

It's quite odd, really - at 1080 x 960 pixels per eye, the PSVR resolution is pretty decent but, yeah, it's relatively low for the size of the "screen" being displayed. Screenshots always look weak - almost like poor PS2 games - but I find that the view visible to the player is terrific; the colour pops and the sense of 3D outweighs the resolution limitations.

The biggest hurdle for VR is getting people to try it; the fact that 2D screenshots and videos are nothing like the actual experience is a real tough challenge. The only way to appreciate it is to try it.

I think this is the point im getting at - and shadow, occlusion and reflection all do a lot to empthasise 3D space and depth. I hope the stand alone VR units start utilising these features more frequently going forward. I cant believe that shadows are that resource intensive? Maybe the Q2 will start incorpoating them.

Yeah, my only VR experience is with PSVR but shadows sure do help add depth and atmosphere. The use of light and dark colouring in Moss is marvelous; you feel like you could reach out and touch things! Oh, and that's another thought - I love how Moss places you right in amongst the levels; in some stages you feel like you're sat in the area itself as the environment comes right up to you.

Nice! I guess I'm now one of those spoilt brats who never knew what it was like to put up with lower resolution.

After about an hour or so I definitely get an increasing feeling that I need to take it off. I don't like how it makes my head/ears get hot and flushed with blood, but I guess it's just something you have to accept.

I don't think I have that issue, I've used VR before for like 4-5 hours in a row before on my first quest and while it was uncomfortable I got so used to it it didn't bother me. :shifty:

Took my Quest round to a friend's house yesterday and it was exactly as others have described in here. He was absolutely stunned by it and is now getting one for Christmas!

The only problem is he got so into the table tennis game that by the end of the night, my headset was soaked in his sweat... :dread:

The Quest is an excellent device, but Facebook's increasing interference is really making it difficult to recommend.

strawberry float everything to do with Facebook.

Last week, Facebook's augmented and virtual reality boss Andrew Bosworth responded to the account suspension issue by saying "people should continue to make sure their Facebook accounts are in good standing before they buy the headset".

Starting to sound like the incentivised repression of China’s social credit system.

'We decide whether you deserve to use your device.'

Yeah, not touching an oculus product after this nonsense. It is a shame as I have been looking at headsets and the Quest 2 seems like a good option.

It's total bullshit, and watching people defend it by saying its just the same as an Xbox live or PSN account is infuriating. Nobody uses their Live or PSN accounts to manage a social media account on an unrelated website that's got strawberry float all to do with their games collection, and also insists on linking itself to the rest of your entire browsing history and integration with myriad other apps.

I'm just hope that but 2023, when I will be forced to switch my Oculus account to a Facebook one, when I deleted my Facebook account within the last year anyway, someone has found a decent way to hack the Quest so I can continue to access purchased games, and use it with my PC.

I must admit, it’s giving me pause on buying any more games for my Quest. Not so much because of my desire to safeguard my information (though obviously I have a healthy desire to do so), but more because I am genuinely concerned that I may lose my entire library access due to my FB account being flagged for some nonsensical reason.

Hopefully this situation will be clearer come 2023, but it has certainly put me off upgrading to a Q2. PSVR2 is the platform I will in all likelihood be supporting long term. Whether it will be out by then (or ever) I am less certain of.

I've been looking at a Quest but have been concerned about people's reports about Facebook integration, but I find myself asking: do I actually care?

I already have a Facebook account which I am very unlikely to get rid of because I do actually use it!

Whilst the ability to play games natively on the device is useful and I probably would buy a couple, the ultimate aim would be to use it on non-Oculus games (i.e. Steam, Epic, Origin etc - all those lovely companies who never do anything shady like mean old Facebook ) - if all my games are on those platforms how can Facebook take them off me?

And if - IF - it suddenly became important that I was no longer on Facebook and there was no hack available, couldn't I just scrub my account of any personal details and keep the Oculus bit live? Could I "sell" my Oculus to another user who doesn't live with me but seems to share a lot of the same IP addresses? If worst came to worst, couldn't I just sell it for real, and write the investment off?

Not sure if I'm missing anything here. I get the concerns with social media companies, but I partake in this sector of 21st Century life despite them.

I signed in using my Facebook account and I've not noticed anything to do with it since then.

My Facebook account lies dormant 98% of the time, like it has done for probably about a decade now.

This is where I say "Meh", then it cuts to a scene of me a few hours later where my organs are being harvested by a robot with a face like Mark Zuckerberg.

This is tautologous, you could just say Mark Zuckerberg.

Dowbocop wrote:(i.e. Steam, Epic, Origin etc - all those lovely companies who never do anything shady like mean old Facebook ) -

As unreliable as those companies may have been, currently, your impact to your games library with them I largely dictated by your conduct in their launcher or in their games. Epic aren't locking people out of their libraries if they get a twitter ban, for instance.

The biggest sticking point for me is that it's totally needless for them to force this integration. Previously, you could do everything on your headset with just an Oculus account, and could link your Facebook to it if you wanted. Now a Facebook account is mandatory, with no tangible benefit, and a TOS that's built for a social media platform rather than a games system, with no thought about how the two might differ, plus all the privacy and data harvesting concerns that come with having a Facebook account. It's all well and good people suggesting using dummy accounts for this purpose, but duplicate and fake name accounts are against Facebook TOS, so you risk losing all your games purchases and progress if you do this, too.

Cross post but relevant. If you intend to use a PSVR with PS5 then claim your free camera adapter here: https://camera-adaptor.support.playstation.com/en
