Thanks for vids HSH28.

That Facebook Horizon, trailer is corny but demonstrates a show of faith in the virtual life. I was recently lamenting the demise of PlayStation Home and was thinking it would work with VR, I know there's VRChat on PC. Of course it could be filled with little mini-game crap like Home had, but it has room to grow a big audience.

Oculus wrote:Today at OC6, we unveiled Facebook Horizon, a new social VR world coming to Oculus Quest and the Rift Platform in 2020. A culmination of what we’ve learned so far about virtual spaces and communities, Horizon is the first step into an ever-expanding world of connection and exploration where anything becomes possible.
VR is already a great place to hang out with friends, play games, and watch movies. It’s also a fantastic way to learn new skills and explore our world. Human curiosity and connection are central to each of these experiences, and they’re also at the heart of Horizon. Starting with a bustling town square where people will meet and mingle, the Horizon experience then expands to an interconnected world where people can explore new places, play games, build communities, and even create their own new experiences.

Before stepping into Horizon for the first time, people will design their own avatars from an array of style and body options to ensure everyone can fully express their individuality. From there, magic-like portals—called telepods—will transport people from public spaces to new worlds filled with adventure and exploration. At first, people will hop into games and experiences built by Facebook, like Wing Strikers, a multiplayer aerial experience.

All over the Quest now. We usually get partner promotional discounts through work with a couple of retailers that stock them, so I'll wait until the next one or those and I'm diving in. My wife will probably kill me for spending so much, but with Link, the Quest looks like everything I want from a VR headset. And with streaming properly supported, it should have a decent life cycle to it.

Evidence has surfaced that reveals Microsoft is working on VR products. Microsoft has registered patents for a VR boundary mat and a motion controller. Diagrams indicate a home console so more likely for Xbox Scarlett than for PC. Not all patents are turned into products.

According to the patent, it seems like this VR mat marks the edges of the map for the player. The VR headset appears to be connected to a console and a camera that sits on top of the TV.

Another patent suggests that the team is developing some sort of motion controller for the console. You may be able to use it with one hand, while the other has a directional stick. For example, you can move around with a thumbstick, but if you're using a sword, you have to replicate the motion. It's similar to what Nintendo did with the Wii.

Lastly, the same patent reveals that a stylus may be in development for the upcoming console. This may allow you to play Nintendo DS-like games on the device and may lead to new experiences.

I am bloody knackered. I think I should play more stuff sitting down and get fit. I may get a steering wheel now as well. No signs of motion sickness but I do need to rest for a while. One think I do feel gets overlooked is watching a movie, it's almost on a par with seeing it on the big screen, I just need some twats talking too loud, some bint on a phone and lots of coughing and spluttering.

If you are in to sims in any way, you absolutely have to do this. I use a Logitech G29 and a playseat challenge for my VR stuff. It's so immersive.

I ended up buying a G920 and it adds a lot to driving. Now to stop being completely shite at driving in games.

Did you buy the knuckles controllers? (Or whatever they're called now). Would love some impressions on if they're worth the cash or not (I have a Vive).

I will just say you have to get them, they are brilliant.

Yes there are some issues with the stick clicking and stick drift for some people but I am yet to have issues with them.

The are very comfortable and feel very secure in your hands with the palm strap and wrist lanyard. The ability to just let go and it stays in your hand is good when resting. I have had a full 6+ hours of battery life from each controller as well. Playing Pavlov or H3 seems a little more immersive when handling guns and with the vibration just adds to the experience.

Thanks for this, I forgot to say this swayed me towards getting the controllers (after previously balking at the price), and it just took the push of half life for me to get them.

Apparently you can get the Index in Canadia now so with luck the rest of Europe in the very near future.

So is there a good run down of the various VR headsets on the market at the moment?
Like HTC Vive vs Oculus Rift vs Oculus Quest vs Windows AMR headsets, that goes into the Pros and Cons of each of them against one another?

Am I right in thinking that the free Vader Immortal bundle is on if you buy a Quest from anywhere, and just activate it in the offer window? The Oculus website makes it sound like you're buying a particular bundle from them, but then I saw this from Scan.co.uk which makes it sound like any activation should let you redeem it.

Edit : apparently so https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/co ... nt/f8o6lc2

There are no codes required. If you activate a Quest on your Oculus account right now, it should automatically give you all three Episodes for free as long as you activate it by March 2nd, 2020.

Is there any real point in going for the 128GB Quest over the 64GB one when it's a £100 price difference?

I'm not experienced with the Quest so I can't say if there are any differences, but 64GB isn't that much and unless you want to be deleting and re-downloading stuff constantly I'd go for the bigger storage.
