It’s been 17 months since the release of Zelda VR. Hyrule Field is claimed as the most stunning visuals and experience in gaming history.

Jawa has not yet left the cave from the start of the game.

I had another go at getting into Skyrim VR.

It's certainly impressive, but I'm just not having any fun with it :(

After multiple attempts to enjoy it, it's got to go.

There's no equivalent to Mario's longjump, dive or cap throw, nothing like Celeste's dash (let alone the near-infinite intricacies of the dash-jumps). Overall I just found very little of what I personally appreciate about platformers.
I like the game, but I don't love it. That's probably okay.

It might be ok, but it is also surprising to me.

Its completely at odds with my experience and all the other experiences I've heard about from other people playing the game.

There is nuance to the controls, the laser hover is perfectly designed for the game and the movement is pretty much perfect. For me its basically as well designed and as good in control as a 3D Mario platformer...and that's the kind of comparison I've seen from everyone else I've heard talk about the game.

Eurogamer declare Tetris Effect their game of the year.

our choice for game of the year is a game to cut through all this noise and make a nonsense of all this talk. It's a game of utter purity, a contemporary take on a timeless classic, and a genuinely inspiring and uplifting experience. It doesn't care about the zeitgeist, because it is, in itself, the history and the future of video games rolled into one. It's Tetris Effect.

Since my shitty accident a little over a week before Christmas I haven't touched my PSVR, figured I'd ease myself back in to it. With Beat Saber :fp:

After an hour and a half straight attempting crazy arsed single saber missions I'm going to be in pain :fp:

Knew I should have went with Astro Bot or RE7 VR

Yeah Beat Saber isn't the most sedentary of games.

It is damn good though.

HTC have posted a tweet that teases new VR hardware. It says: 'The truck is loaded and we’re excited be on our way to #CES2019. The cases are packed with some new gear we can’t wait to unbox for you.'

This is where they announce new headset tech and a price drop on the Vive Pro and I groan because I just bought a Rift.

It'll be interesting to see what they're bringing though.

Come on you knuckles controllers.

You're right! The text has been deliberately pixelated whilst the text on the left box is fine.

PSVR Aim Controller arrived yesterday. I’m quite impressed with it; it’s a lot more solid than I thought it would be.
Anyway, I tried Farpoint last night and it was great. I must admit I played the first 30 mins or so a little like a shooting gallery, but there was a moment before I turned it off where I charged towards two large bugs, spraying a little crab alien with rifle fire to my right on the way, before switching to shotgun (the game handles changing weapons on the fly by moving the gun over your shoulder) and blowing away the two bugs up close and personal. I felt like Master Chief :D

It may or may not be of use to you (other people don't seem to have found it the best way to play), but personally I've found there to be one particular way to play the game that is better than any other.

Stand up when playing.
Don't turn on the 2nd analogue stick.
Physically turn your whole body to turn.

Its the most actual presence I've had in a PSVR game, playing like that. Sitting down and using the stick to turn not only makes me ill, it just doesn't feel as good to play that way.

That’s exactly how I was playing it. No way I’m using a stick to look about when I’ve got a headset on.
It was a fantastic experience.

I would love to try the Aim controller (especially as I have Firewall sat collecting dust) but no way am I shelling out on something that I might only use once if the vomit goblins make an appearance. I wonder if the control method that Hugo has suggested above is effective at nullifying motion sickness?

When I had Firewall that's how I'd play it, standing up and never a hint of motion sickness.

The only downside is if you have to shoot at something behind you as it obscures the Aim controller from the camera.

Stepped movement turning options are good for this though and stop me from feeling ill.

I found that it was generally designed well enough so that even though I had no real clue in which way I was facing, I hardly ever got turned completely away from the camera.

It did happen on occasion, but it comes up in game as an area overlaid onto the gameworld that can't be tracked, I'm not sure how I dealt with it (I think you must be able to recentre if you have to), but playing that way definitely added to the immersion even with that limitation.

Needed more stuff to play the Aim with, so I’ve gone for Arizona Sunshine in the sale. Had decent enough reviews.
Impressions once the kids are asleep!

Regarding the issue of things being behind you, did I see a 180 degree-swivel button brought to my attention in the pause menu of Farpoint? I wasn’t paying much attention last night.
