Assassin's Creed VR trailer:

Looks alright. Quest exclusive, which is bullshit.

Expectation dampening, dev Q&A:
How much freedom do players have to choose their own path? Is it a totally open sandbox, or are there linear levels with several intended paths?

DV: It is a core pillar that they're what we call open maps. It's not one big open world like in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey or Valhalla, but it is very explorable. Think of Venice or Boston – in the section of town that you will play in, if you can see it, you can climb it, you can parkour it. You can scale it, traverse it horizontally, vertically, etc. – again, because that's what Assassin’s Creed is, right? And we want to make sure we deliver on that. Most of the objectives in the game are what we call tactical sandboxes, which allow players 360 degrees of freedom in terms of how they approach it. Do they want to sneak in? Do they want to go in fighting, use the rooftops, or stay down on the ground?

I will say that the first couple of missions are more linear, as players learn how to play Assassin’s Creed in VR, but after that – and for the rest of the campaign – it’s all open environments. We felt it was very important to keep this core tenet of the brand intact.

The game is apparently "full-length", whatever they've decided that actually means.

Also: Meta Quest 3 is launching in just under two weeks. Maaaay have put in a pre-order. :shifty:

Ad for the thing:

About as heartwarming and sincere as these things go (which is to say not very, but you can tell they're trying). Well put-together enough as such things go.

Hands-on video:

So I’ve been enjoying my meta quest 3. Tried Ghosts of Tabar. It’s effectively Tarkov VR. Loved the concept, the realism is superb, control feels very tactile and it ticks all the boxes of something I’d love. The shooting is tight graphics decent. However

Worst motion sickness ever. 10 min play time and I felt rough for over an hour afterwards. Just couldn’t cope. Had a break tried again. The movement just strawberry floats me up completely. Such a shame.

I can't hack smooth motion when standing in VR, I feel strawberry floating awful. If it's teleport motion then I'm fine so if that's an option could you try that?

I've got an index now, so my OG vive is going unused. I'll sell it dirt cheap to someone from here if anyone is interested? Only problem is I'm keeping the base stations to use with my setup so it'll be the headset (with Pro head strap) and controllers only. The base stations look to be pretty pricey so it may not be worth it but the offer is there.

I decided I can't justify a Quest 3 yet. It's still very difficult for me to find the time and space to play VR, and the cost is off-putting during a period when the best games are graphically enhanced existing titles – as much as I would love to play the Walking Dead on it for that reason alone.

Optimistically and naively hoping for a price cut in time for Christmas next year, along with a range of games that have been designed with Quest 3 architecture/capabilities in mind.

I built a tolerance to smooth motion while playing The Walking Dead S&S but I still prefer teleportation as I find the smooth motion sometimes breaks my immersion and makes it feel more gamey. Whereas with teleportation I feel like I'm genuinely inside a world at all times.

This is it, teleport is fine but this game (and I guess most realistic FPS games) don’t support it. I would try sitting but then you lose the free aiming and ducking etc. had to refund it.

So I’ve decided to hook up my quest 3 to my PC to try that out. Lot of hoops to get it set up but seems intuitive once I downloaded all the things I needed. I’ll admit this was solely to play half life Alyx and was the reason I chose quest 3 over PSVR2. Only snag is that I have had to order a longer cable (I’ve read airplay is less reliable).

Half life Alyx downloading as I type! Hoping it will run well on my set up.

I use Virtual Desktop to get my quest connected to my PC, and it works fine. Obviously best if your PC is wired to the router, but even with both over wifi, it's more than good enough.

Any joy with this?

Also, did you have a Quest 2? Wondering your general impressions on the comparison between the two if so.

I note Onward is one of the games that hasn't received a graphical upgrade, which is probably a good thing as if it does then I'll rapidly find myself out of £500 :slol:.

Neve had a quest 2 so can’t comment. Quest 3 and half life Alyx seemed to work well in the 5 min I tried. Occasional frame drops but nothing drastic and the visuals are incredible. Trouble was I only had a 50cm cable so I was practically glued to my computer and couldn’t move my head much. I have a 3m cable arriving today so will be able to try it properly in a wide space later.

So Half Life Alyx started well but quickly the frame rate tanked. It was constantly having to reload environments and was at times barely playable. When I checked my laptop it was melting hot, could hardly touch it which explains the deteriorating frame rate. I’ll have a tinker tomorrow and see if I can’t cool it (I had t laid it on proper surface given where I was using the VR boundary. Actual gameplay was cool and the textures blew my mind, the detail on the walls, books wooden surfaces were super realistic. I think the issue is my PC not the meta quest.

That's a shame. As you can already tell its an incredible game and it'd be a shame if your experience was soured by your laptop crapping out. Are you running it on the lowest settings to help things? It's not like it looks bad or anything on low.

I’ve done some googling and think I can adjust a few settings to help. Also I’ll pop laptop on a cooling stand to help with heat dissipation. I’ll have a play tomorrow and report back. The quality settings didn’t affect my performance which makes me think it’s a heat issue. The specs should be good enough to run it smoothly (razor blade laptop GTX 2070 super and 16GB ram). I’ll accept that meta quest may not be as good as valve index but it doesn’t seem to be a problem and image is crisp and sharp with great detail. I won’t be defeated as I can already tell this is a premium VR experience.

A reminder I played the first time on a 1070 with my old vive at high settings with no bother, so you should be getting a better experience with that spec.

I hope you get it working well as Alyx really is an incredibly experience. Nothing else will come close.

Turns out it was an over heating issue, and I think laptop wasnt plugged in correctly so might have been running on battery. Set up cooling stand and tried again today and pleased to announce it’s running well again! Just got my special gloves and gun! But why is the first area I go to full of dead zombies! VR makes that sense of dread I got in ravenholm a thousand times worse…

Wahey! :toot:

I remember also being terrified of the zombies when I first started, like real panic inducing, but now I'm a fearless, cool as ice, zombie killing machine :datass:

They haven’t even done anything yet and I still want to pop a few headshots just to be safe!

The combine are an absolute joke in Half Life 2. In Alyx though holy strawberry float ever single time I come across them I felt so scared.
