It's definitely not perfect, but the overall sensation is more than enough to wash over the minor annoyances. I'm kinda surprised that there hasn't been more hype about it but I suspect that - like I was - unless you try it out, you just can't really get a sense of how it works. 2D formats - whether on screen or on paper - just can't demonstrate the effect.

Just thinking about some of the sensations in my first couple of hours of using VR... wow!

And herein lies the problem - Most people have had experience with 3D cinema, with it's shitty in your face OMFG A SNAKE JUST LUNGED AT ME effects and assume its the same as that. There's no way to convey that you're put inside your games, not just looking at them with popout 3d effects.

When I play my sims, i'm sat in a car, it's all around me, i can peer over the dash at the bonnet, look in the mirrors, see cars to my sides. When I play elite, i'm in a spaceship, i'm IN space, it's strawberry floating fantastic.

But yeah its just a gooseberry fool gimmick mate back to fifa.

Absolutely, Ad. I played Skyrim VR for the first time tonight and it's astonishing. You're actually in a gameworld; one that, whilst you may be familiar with it, blows you away with how you can look around in 360 degrees at any time! When you're in that cart talking with other people at the start, you're actually in the cart and turning to listen to the people! It's remarkable and, tbh, a little overwhelming at first.

Experiencing PSVR over the past 24 hours has been one of the most memorable moments in my years of gaming. It's definitely not perfect but the sheer feeling of exhilaration makes the few frustrations mere quibbles.

Played Superhot again tonight got to the point where you have to show your commitment...

I couldn't go over with the headset on, I kept getting close but then stood back, so I took the headset off to move it forward so I didn't feel that sensation of falling...such a wuss.

God help me if I try the plank experience game.

So take all that and realise that this is still very early days for the tech.

Resolutions will increase, tracking will get better, motion sickness will be minimised, interfaces will become better.

Just trying to imagine where this will be in 10 years is insane.

I can't wait to read your post after you've played the Star Wars Battlefront VR mission... :)

Definitely. At first it was Batman VR then I played Battlefronts VR mission and that takes the top spot on strawberry floating awesome. Real shame they did strawberry float all after it and nothing with Battlefront 2.

I would happily have abandoned my principles and bought Battlefront 2 if they had included a VR mode.

X-Wing mission - That first time when you turn your head and see the R2 unit behind you

Have any of you had a go on trials on tatootine? It's much the same thing except a room scale experience.

You Are stood out in the desert, the falcon comes in and lands beside you. You fix the falcon, some tie fighters attack, R2 comes out and you take a lightsaber from him, which you then use to deflect blaster fire back at some attacking stormtroopers

I tried it and granted it was pretty much broken at the time when playing with Oculus (not sure if it ever got fixed) and I can imagine it lost a lot of its charm in that state...but its not as much of a proper game experience as the X-Wing VR Mission is.

You could literally take the core of the X-Wing VR Mission, expand it out in different environments, but keep the same basic gameplay and you'd have an amazing Star Wars VR game. I don't think you could do the same with Trials.

I played it at the (recently closed) National Videogame Arcade in Nottingham a while back. To be honest I wasn't that impressed but I think the headset wasn't on correctly as the image was really grainy. I also felt super self conscious as it was a fairly public play space. Probably didn't help the immersion.

Tried a wee bit more PSVR this evening... level 1-2 of Astro Bot (delightful; just brilliant!) and the opening trainer level of Doom VFR (very impressive but I felt that the controls are not intuitive; need to re-play it to get the hang of it).

Early days yet, but Astro Bot feels like one of the most fun games I've played.

I was a little like Jawa; I wasn't completely unbothered by VR but I did think I'd be perfectly happy without sampling it. I was under the impression it was a fad. But there was always that little inkling that I should try it.
Then the PSVR Black Friday deals erupted. Many in the Bargains Thread said that the deals were amazing. "strawberry float it", I thought. I'd like to know what this is like. I managed to persuade the wife to put xmas present money towards it, paid the rest myself, and about 4 weeks ago took delivery of that excellent Currys deal that included Move Controllers, Astro Bot and VR Worlds.

My first evening went something like this:

VR Worlds Shark Attack - "Wow. I'm in the cage. I'll just look over my shoulder. HOLY gooseberry fool! There's stuff happening behind me! I'll just look ahead again. HOLY gooseberry fool! There's a fish in front of my face!" It made a great first impression. Then I played...

Star Wars Battlefront VR mission - "Oh my God! The targeting computer is behind me! HOLY gooseberry fool! I'm underneath a Star Destroyer! Oh my giddy aunt I just blew up a TIE Fighter and flew through the explosion just like the films"

And then I tried Astro Bot. Imagine my surprise when that little cute platformer managed to blow away everything I'd experienced in the previous two games. It's incredible.

Last night I played Super Hot for the first time. Wow. Just wow.

In summary: VR is a game-changer. My thanks to those persuasive, enthusiastic people in the Bargains Thread. Best Christmas for me since I got Photon Guns. (look them up, kids)

Change the controls method from teleporting to a spot to a free roaming one, and Doom VFR will be more natural in controls terms.

And Astro Bot is one of my GOTY games. I haven't felt that wonderful with it since Super Mario 64. The VR made the game. If it wasn't then it'll be a bog-standard platformer.

Also nab Batman Arkham VR the next time it's on sale. It's a very short game but you're the goddamn Batman.

Borderlands 2 is released today and is has received some mixed positive scores on the VR specialist websites. Generally good fun gameplay, but the developer is recommending frequent comfort breaks every 15 - 20 minutes!

5/5 - VR Focus
7/10 - Upload VR
5.9/10 - Road to VR

You can buy it from the PlayStation Store for £39.99.
