jawafour wrote:I've completed one week with VR. There are plenty of things that could be improved upon but these issues combined don't stop me from thinking that the overall experience is fantastic.

As a reminder, I'm using PSVR on a PS4 Pro system with the standard Dualshock controller.

I have found myself getting mildly dizzy at times and I tend to play in sessions no longer than thirty minutes before taking a little break. I find that it depends on the game / experience; I had no proiblems with Ocean Dive or Astro Bot, but I did with Skyrim (it's okay but takes getting used to) and Doom (I was using the default teleport movement option but I will try the standard move method). To be honest I suffer dizzyness with movement in real life so this VR effect is not nearly as bad as I'd thought it would be.

I'm also having issues with keeping the earpieces in (even though there are three size options) but this is more due to my funny ears rather than a design issue.

But... these challenges are minor inconveniences in relation to the overall experience. It's terrfic, but also hard to explain or demonstrate with traditional 2D tools; folk need to try it out for themselves. I was expecting some sort of mild 3D effect similar to that of old comicbooks but it's far more than that; you feel like you are in the gameworlds and that you could reach out to things! Now that I have experienced it, I'm surprised that VR gains relatively little coverage in games media; in my opinion, things like Astro-Bot should have people shouting from the rooftops with praise! The biggest challenge for the VR market is discovering ways of allowing people to experience it; other media just cannot show it at its best. At least the cost issue has been dented with PSVR edging closer to a mainstream market price. Considering how many PS4 consoles have been sold, Sony has an opportunity to really push the VR format now that the pricing is a little more attractive.

Couple of things I'd add for you Jawa.

Skyrim - Everyone is different, but I use step turning and smooth forward/back/strafe on the left Move controller. Not sure how that feels with the DS4, but certainly smooth turning in anything makes my brain feel ill.

Earphones - Get a set of over ear ones. Far more comfortable and much better sound than the awful inner ear things you get with it. I hate those things.

Certainly feels like as the price continues to drop that more and more people are able to give it a punt. I don't think we're too far off seeing our first official PS4 + PSVR pack.

The packs could benefit from coming with move controllers as these do make game experiencs better, Beat Saber and Superhot for example.

Brought the physical version of Fruit Ninja for 12 quid off Amazon, hope its alright.

Still haven't given Rush another go yet, has anyone else played it yet?

At present im not really sure what VR brings to Tetris if i am honest. Good game, but not something i would use to promote VR specifically.

Anyone played Red Matter yet or Guns n Stories worth picking up?

Thanks for the info, Cheeky Dev. Yeah, I need to play around with some of the movement options in the games in order to identify which ones suit my tastes best. Good call on the earphones; I have a set of cans so I'll try them the next time I use PSVR.

The recent updates in this thread convinced me to get Astro Bot and dust off the VR. Had a go on Tetris, wasn't massively impressed. The I realised I needed to restart it. :fp: Did that. Mind blown. Now waiting for Astro Bot to install whilst I recover from my astral experience.

I finished World 3 on Astro Bot last night. I was grinning ear to ear during every level.

Astro Bot is incredible. You got the impression from the playroom stuff that those guys knew what they were doing but they've taken it far beyond that. Only 2 levels in and the grin on my face is insane. So much originality, so many cute touches. Can't wait to play more.

It's great to see the appreciation for Astro Bot! Personally I think it feels like a Nintendo-quality platformer... taken to a new dimension.

Started Astrobot today. It’s even better than I expected. It’s just so pretty, intuitive and joyful. Now I’m considering picking up Tetris Effect for Xmas. But I like my vr games digital, and it is bound to go on sale for a price similar to the high street deals before long.

On the back of Astro Bot's reputation, I finally decided to buy PSVR. I haven't played it yet, but the demo in the Playroom made me feel a bit poorly. Not a lot poorly, just a bit poorly.

I think I shall also treat myself to Rez and Tetris Effect.

Oh and I bought Gnog...

Welcome, Octo, to the world of VR!

I find that tinkering with the settings on games is critical. I've been okay with Playroom (Astro-Bot), VR Worlds (Ocean Dive) and Astro-Bot: Rescue Mission, whilst I felt it a bit in Skyrim and really noticed it in Doom. Some folk prefer "full movement" style (i.e. move the stick to move in real-time) whilst others prefer the teleport approach (move the stick/pad to teleport a few steps ahead). It can vary game-by-game, too. I've found that playing in short bursts helps (I play for thirty minutes at a time) and I've heard that this builds up your level of comfort with VR.

I'm pretty certain you'll be amazed by Astro-Bot :-) .

That's sitting on my virtual VR pile of shame.

By the way, when it goes cheap, buy Statik. It's really good.

Utterly amazed! I'm three levels in, but It's half past two in the morning and my eyes need a rest.

It's currently discounted to £3.99 with Plus so I bought it.

Going to try and get some Move controllers tomorrow.

Ok so anyone with PSVR that doesn't have it should buy Statik. Really good VR puzzle game.

There are some decent PSVR deals in the PS Store’s Jan Sale - such as Moss for £14.99 (haven’t seen this on disc for less than £20 so far), Rez Infinite (£11.99) and Superhot (£12.99).

Sadly, though expectedly, Tetris Effect is full price...

Those with PC VR (all 2 of us it seems) should look at the current steam sales as there is quite a lot of VR stuff in there.

How easy is it to get steam stuff to work for the rift? Probably picking one up after Christmas/New Year so might get some games while their cheap.

Looks like some other good deals though. I've personally gone for DOOM VFR, Sprint Vector, VR The Diner Duo and Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes.

Still got lots of other games on my VR to play pile like Rez, Statik and Tethered, otherwise I might have gone for a few others. Currently working my way through Moss which is very pleasant but suffers when being played after the magnificent Astro Bot!

I have no idea, but considering the rift logo appears on games along with the Vive one, I'd imagine it's as simple as for Vive which is start steam, and launch the steam vr environment. Or you can just launch a game directly. There's dedicated launchers for each brand anyway but I just use steam.

It's really easy either way.

Just In Time Inc is a pretty cool game too. I've gone and bought Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin. I know it doesn't have outstanding reviews, but I've been curious about it for a while. Might even get Psychonauts and replay that first as it's on sale too.

To The Top and Windlands are both on my wishlist and on sale, but not sure I've built up enough tolerance for them yet
