I felt much the same. After playing it for a few hours, I turned off the console and had to ask myself when I last genuinely enjoyed my time with a game as much. Not the last time mechanics were so perfect, a story twist so clever etc, but just that I have genuinely enjoyed so much.
I have noticed we seem to have a large overlap in our gaming tastes and reactions btw
Yeah, we do seem to have similar (high quality) tastes. To the point where I'll check out a game if you're positive about it.
Thing with this is, I've been playing games since god was a lad and there really isn't much new under the sun these days. Mostly I'm looking for stuff that does interesting things as opposed to the next iteration of a AAA series. It's probably why I've got a million and one useless peripherals clogging up my loft, I'm constantly looking for a new way to play something. Astro Bot genuinely suprises me at every turn, it's really the first time a dev has fully understood the range of possibilities on offer with VR. Very much how Tearaway was perfectly created for the Vita.
If you look beyond the veneer then it's essentially just a fancy ghost train ride. Everything is on rails. But what a ride!
