Drunk poser bought sober poser a PSVR starter kit on eBay over the weekend. £160 for the starter kit. I wish I'd bought when it was cheap over Xmas/Black Friday but I was skint at the time.

The box doesn't include VR Worlds - do I need that? Is that the thing with the shark tank thingy?

It's cool but not essential, basically if you need to justify the spend to your significant other then it's probably the thing to use. I think there is some of it on the demo disk you can download so maybe just go with that. The none shark stuff isn't much to write home about. Get the 3 demo collections from the store and also the playroom VR (this is essential as it's tremendous fun, particularly in multiplayer).

EDIT

Here's the content on the 3 demo discs, quite a bit of duplication between them

Collection 1
DRIVECLUB™ VR
RIGS™ Mechanized Combat League
PlayStation® VR Worlds
Tumble VR
Until Dawn™: Rush of Blood

Collection 2

Collection 3

You read my mind :slol:

Thanks for the response. I didn't realise the demos were available, so I'll start with those and see how I get on from there.

I got mine with the starter pack, and might have felt a bit let down if I'd bought it.

Which isn't to say it's not great fun - it really is, for an hour or two, but I can't see me coming back to this except to show it off. It's basically 5 minigames - some of which (like the shark one) don't involve much interaction.

The shark one was actually pretty terrifying - it's fun to watch people shriek and duck out of the way, and embarrassing when you do it yourself.

The best one is a sort of interactive film / occasional shooting game called London Heist. It was a bit of a hoot; watching the other half leaping and ducking away from bullets, or spend ages trying to light a virtual cigar. And I nearly careered headlong through the front window trying to grab a weapon I thought I could reach. But again, it feels like a demo lasting maybe 20-30 minutes, I'd guess and it's sort of a one shot thing. Could have made a decent full game, though.

The rest of them are fun enough for a minutes, but that's all, I'd say

OK, cheers. I might be ok, in that case - I've just gone and hoovered up all the free content available on the store at the moment, including the demos, and I'm sure I've had some VR games in the past with Plus, so I'll get those too if I can find them.

Another noob question: how essential would you guys say the Move controllers are? I'm going to play without to begin with, I think, and see how I get on. What essential experiences am I missing out on without them?

I've said this to a few people on here now but I would really recommend at least giving Resi 7 a go to see if you can get into it. It's absolutely brilliant in VR, and I'd put playing through the intro and first section of the game as one of my most memorable gaming experiences.

Thanks to qupe for the demo recommendation, but for now I decided to jump straight in with Resi. And yes, that was terrifying.

I really haven't gotten very far, but the first time you get attacked had me shrieking and flailing around like the Tasmanian Devil. Think I'm hooked already though, even if I'm not sure I'll dare playing it when I'm alone.

The VR really made my weekend, even if I tend to be playing it in short bursts.

Ace Combat 7 / Wipeout tonight, with a few cans of strong lager and a chunder-bucket ready!

I've been wondering this too.

I see on the demo list that there are a few games that need them. Having not got move controllers in the first place, though, I don't know which ones are any good.

Or, probably just better to ask, are any of those games good enough to justify getting some? And likewise, if there's anything which doesn't need them VR wise but which really benefits from having them?

For me there aren't that many experiences on PSVR that really take advantage of Move controllers, I think the main one at the moment would be Beat Saber, Move controllers required.

Skyrim VR, Until Dawn: Rush Of Blood, Star Trek Bridge Crew, Tumble VR and Batman: Arkham VR I think all benefit from playing with the Move controllers as should Dreams when it comes out.

Personally I'd say that the AIM VR controller is a more revelatory experience, its used in less games, but is better and changes Farpoint from a fairly dull linear shooter into something I'd say was a PSVR must play.

Move controllers are a must for me. They increase the level of immersion substantially simply by allowing you to have hands. It sounds like a tiny thing, but it has a massive impact and really makes some games so much better. Not using them is like being handcuffed and while they're not perfect, they are definitely worth it.

VR has taken tech that was derided and looked down on (Motion controls) and made it shine. They're finally in a context that makes sense and unlike Wii or PS3 era moves or Kinect, they work to elevate the games they are part of, not detract.

You can play Skyrim with a pad, but you won't be able to fire the bow and arrow like goddamn Legolas with it.

Beat Saber is also essential.

Thanks, both. I'm now going to have put both of these on my list to pick up, once I've dealt with that dastardly Baker clan.

I hadn't even considered the AIM VR controller before, H. It just looked like a toy and I just assumed shooting games would be a bit like aiming on the Wii when you stick a Wiimote in one of those plastic gun casings and so wouldn't really suit VR as much, or be as natural. But playing London Heist made me think how fun a full on VR shooter could be and how differently and accurately it could work. A bit like you say, Cheeky Devlin, it suddenly makes a lot of overlooked peripheral ideas start to seem to have a real point, and to be better than controlling something 'normally'

I've also been daydreaming about the new Metroid Prime 4 being remade to work with a VR type setup. Not that the Switch would likely be capable of it, but it's the kind of claustrophobic / environmental exploration experience that I imagine would fit this tech so well

I can confirm that VR Prime is glorious right now, but needs a lot of work to fix various issues. The main one is performance and stability patching as well as finding a way to decouple the aiming from the looking.

It's not seen any updates in a year or two though. They were waiting for one of the openVR protocols to developed further so it can be properly integrated into Dolphin. VR Dolphin is basically stuck where normal Dolphin was 3 years or so ago so it's playable but it needs substantial tweaking, updates and stability before it's ready for "Prime" time.

No way! I really thought you were having me on with that till I googled this just now - I'd no idea this even existed. Which mainly just exposes my shocking lack of Oculus / Rift knowledge.

Mind Blown Again.

Not getting this any time soon, though or I'll be needing a second mortgage before long.

I say that now, of course, and then a couple of whiskys later...

If you have PSVR and a US account, Wipeout is $5.99. Rush of Blood is $4.49. Eagle Flight is $5.99.
There’s other good stuff cheap too.
They’re all PS+ prices, but there’s a way around this:
When signed into your US account, select a game you’ve played on it with Options and choose to upload save data to the cloud. You’ll then have the option to get a free trial of PS+. I think it lasts a couple of days. Select it, and fill yer boots with the discount prices.

I thought you could only do it once, but I just had a look and I qualify for the free trial again, so maybe you can do it once every 6 months or a year or something.

For me Move controllers are essential.

Superhot is great with them, Rush of Blood feels better, Racket Fury, I expect you to die, Beat Saber to name a few

I disagree with this, Motion controlled games were good before VR came along. There are good motion controller games and bad ones and the same goes for motion controller games in VR.

On the subject of Skyrim, the Move controllers might be good for weapons, but it then limits your ability to move in game, which I'd say is just as important. Overall I'd rather play with the controller in that game.

The Move controllers have been in dire need of an upgrade ever since PSVR was announced, it doesn't look like its going to happen, but only a redesigned controller with an analogue stick and better tracking would make Move controllers a must have addition for me.

Well I'm not paying ridiculous prices for PS Move controllers. Are Sony have suppliers problem with those controllers?

Over £100 for two at Amazon. strawberry floating hell.

If you can pick up a ps3 with move controllers cheap it may be a better option. Sell it on then.

But yes I agree the move controllers need updating with an analogue stick. The old n64 pad came to mind when thinking of this.

So, I've been looking into Move controllers and the AIM VR, and they are either out of stock everywhere, or are ridiculously expensive. You're talking easily more than £100 each for places where they are in stock. It's slightly frustrating as I'm really keen to try both, especially as Doom VFR costs hardly anything and I want to blast some goons with the AIM controller. I wonder why there are such shortages.

Where do people buy their stuff from? I just look on Amazon usually.

Also keen to how Poser has gotten on with it, and whether the missus is won over / about to throw him out

Got my Aim controller bundled with Firewall Zero Hour (£60 from Game on release) and had an old Move controller sitting around from my old PS3 days so just got another from CeX for £25.

The price of Moves is annoying, especially as they were dirt cheap a couple of years ago. Ultimately I do think they are worth it though.
