They work better if they are high up pointing down slightly. I think you will have issues if they are at waist height.

Hm, are there any decent stands you can get for them rather than mounting on the wall?
And do they generally come with decent length cables?

I have mine mounted to extending poles in each corner, and apart from the power leads, they communicate wirelessly with the pc.

When you say extending poles, do you mean like a floor based speaker stand? Or a pole you've got attached to the wall?

They're really extendable curtain rails, with the lighthouses attached via camera pole grips. I've got a few configurations for swapping rooms, but my main one is this:

Extender in one corner, attached to Curtin pole in the other.

(The state of those soon to be replaced curtains)

The Vive kit comes with wall mounts for them anyway, but they require screwing to the wall and so are more permanent, whereas these can be taken down and reconfigured in seconds.

Had a quick go with the index controllers again this evening. Played the knuckles tech demo listed above which was pretty cool. Then I went back to the old superhot

The difference actually grabbing and releasing objects makes is night and day. You really instinctually grab things out of the air now, whereas before you'd wait for it to change colour to indicate it could be grabbed, then just press a button.

Love it.

Well I'd only ever be planning to use it on my office room, which is basically square anyway. I'm guessing I could put one each in opposite corners, high up, pointing down at where I'd normally be sitting or more towards the middle of the room since I'd need to be sat back from my PC.

Though I guess the other decision is....is the Index worth an extra £500-600 over an Oculus for what use I'd get out of it with so many other non-VR games to play on both PC and consoles?

Played a few more of those free games the other night.

Wolfenstein 3D VR is great fun, though I had some issues with the turning controls not working. Was good to hide around a corner before executing some Nazi strawberry float as he walks past. Good fun.

I Can Gun was good as well. A bit more in-depth it's a procedurally generated world where you have to find 12 documents, while avoiding turrets and drones. You only have a pistol, and you need to manage clips, bullets and ensure the gun is ready to fire. It's a bit barren in places but you take very little damage before dying. Good fun and worth a shot.

I think I'm leaning towards getting the Index kit, so headset, controllers and base stations.
Yes the Quest offers a standalone experience, but it's somewhat limited and the games I'd be mostly planning on playing will end up needing it wired/tethered to the PC anyway. It's also not like I plan on using it in multiple different rooms in the house, since my PC is big and heavy so not exactly something I move around.

I can always get the Lego later on.

Cheeky strawberry floaters at Oculus waited until after I'd bought The Climb to offer me £4 of "welcome" store credit, which expires on the 12th, and its not enough to cover anything on its own. :x

I don't know if anybody passed "Boiling Steel" already until the end, but it looks like that it's not the final yet. Who knows if there are any news about 2nd part or smthg like this?

That looks great, if it's as 1:1 As it looks then it would be great for in game interactivity. Shame (I'm guessing) it needs your hands out in front of the headset.

I believe it would as the Quest uses cameras in the headset for tracking, so if the cameras can't see the controllers it can't track them.

Should be ordering my Index set next weekend.
It looks like the base stations come with a wall mounting kit, though I may still also look at some stands instead.

Just went to order my Index and it's gone to "Back in stock soon" :fp:

The Headset + Controller bundle is in stock, but the Headset/Controller/Base station bundle and, oddly, standalone headset, are "Back in stock soon"

They are apparently having issues keeping up with orders since Alyx was announce. Some people are writing bots to notify them when it is in stock.

I'd read about stock issues in the US but in the UK it seemed to be ok. Right up until I was ready to order.

I have heard a few people having the issues in the UK over the last week.

You could always set up an alert to notify you.

Can you? There's nothing on Steam that seems to let me tell it to notify me when back in stock.

Bit of a bugger as I was hoping to have it for Christmas. Every time I've looked over the last week it showed as in stock with 4-8 days delivery

I just checked and it seems they have removed it as a wishlist item which gives an alert. That seems a bit stupid on Valves part.

I do wonder if it is people ordering for xmas so they can play over the holidays especilly if friends and family will be over.
