Does anyone have an oculus quest here? I've just ordered one and I'm being told by a few people it's great and by a few that it's not good at all. Trying to get an honest opinion before it ships in a few days.

Not got one but I've heard good things.

If your PC is up to it I'd see if you can get a cable to link it up. Opens up even more stuff for you (Half-Life in particular).

I've got one and I think it's strawberry floating great.

I've not used any higher end VR kit, so I can't really compare it to the index or the Vive, but my experience with it has been brilliant on its own. Cable free VR, that doesn't need to be hooked up to a PC and can be moved easily from place to place, is honestly a really enjoyable experience, that I think I'd properly miss if I had a tethered headset. Having played through Half Life Alyx on my Quest, I'm not sure how people manage to play tethered VR. I'm sure I would have throttled myself, or ended up pulling the cable out of the PC/standing on it.

My biggest criticism is the Quest store. The range of native titles is kind of limited compared to what's available on the PC, and the pricing is bad, with stuff very rarely going on sale, and Oculus attempting to sell you bundle deals that are usually 6 tangentially linked games selling together for like 5% off. What makes it worse is that the Rift store is much better, because it's obviously having to compete with other PC VR markets, but the Quest is a closed system, so the prices are gooseberry fool. Cross buy is also rare, so buying a title on the Quest store, won't get you the Rift version, and vice versa, meaning the same game can be cheaper on the Oculus store for Rift than it is for Quest, butif you want the Quest version, which will have been scaled down for hardware requirements, you have to pay more for it.

What the Quest does have though, is Sidequest. Unofficial side loading of other apps and games, some of which are just amazing. You can load up the original Half Life, and play through it in VR. Swinging the crowbar in VR feels so good. Tea for God is a really cool game that can generate potentially infinite levels, entirely within the playspace you've marked out. Quake is on there if you want to give yourself motion sickness. There are also some people releasing really fun tech demos, especially with the Quest finger tracking, although that's very early days yet, and still pretty unreliable.

It's sidequest that will also let you wirelessly stream from your PC to your Quest via Virtual Desktop, so you can play Steam VR games as well. All of a sudden, you've got the full PC VR library available, and as far as I'm concerned, the quality is still good. There's some visual compromises, as the video feed has to be compressed, but I was really impressed with the visual quality of a game like Alyx, even when my computer had to run it in low/medium settings. I have my PC connected by ethernet to my router, and then play in the same room to minimise lag while streaming. I typically get about ~40ms or under, and while it's there, it's never caused me any issues like disrupting gameplay, or any physical discomfort.

You also have the option of using the Link cable to connect your Quest to the PC wired, doing away with the problems wireless streaming might cause, but then obviously, you're playing while tethered to the computer again.

I'm thinking of cancelling because one of the major reasons I wanted one was for VRChat, but all the worlds I visit with the people I speak to all don't support the quest lol.

Yes, and you do also have the option of using the Link cable for this as well.

It depends how much you want the native stuff though really. If all you want the headset for is to play connected to the PC, then you'll be better off getting a Rift S.

I've really enjoyed being able to get my family playing Sports Scramble at my brother's place at Christmas, or being able to take the headset round to a friend's house because he's Star Wars mad and wanted to play Vader Immortal. Those are the experiences that make the Quest worth it. If you don't want or need those features, then you're probably better off getting a dedicated PC headset.

It's weird, because I do think the quest native stuff is really cool, but I was also worried one of the main reasons I wanted to get one (to chat with people/interact in VR and stuff) wasn't going to work since native VRChat on quest is pretty gooseberry fool. If I can sideload/virtual desktop to the PC version and that works fine then I'm really happy with that.

I also love the idea of playing Half Life 1 in VR. That sounds amazing.

Half Life 1 requires you to transfer your games files over from the PC, but otherwise runs standalone in the heaset once it's installed:

Not massively, I managed few sessions of Alyx that were at least 2 hours with no real discomfort, but the face cushion definitely needs cleaning every now and again or else it starts to feel a bit itchy.

I'd recommend getting some decent but lightweight headphones. The built in speakers are just OK, but some decent headphones make it much better, however, you probably don't want anything too clunky on top of the headset as well.

I had one and it was great, but it had a dead pixel, returned it and got one with two dead pixels. So I returned it and gave up. It was lovely though, the ability to access VR so effortlessly was incredible. I may pick one up again at some point, but might hold out and see if a more powerful one gets announced.
The resolution was outstanding compared to PSVR (which I have owned since day 1 and still love). Only problem is many of the games are also available on PSVR and are often far cheaper due to the incredibly aggressive PSN sales on anything more than 2 weeks old.

Possible first glimpse at PSVR 2 controller tech:

The video accompanies a new research paper titled ‘Evaluation of Machine Learning Techniques for Hand Pose Estimation on Handheld Device with Proximity Sensor’. Crucially, the work is authored by Kazuyuki Arimatsu and Hideki Mori from Sony Interactive Entertainment. That’s the division of Sony specifically responsible for the PlayStation brand, and not the wider corp. Watch the video below – this could well be the basis forSony next-gen PlayStation Move 2 VR controllers.

Whatever the next iteration of PSVR is, it needs to come with the controllers as standard. The move controllers did the job (just) but so many games requiring them, combined with them costing a fortune and being hard to get a hold of didn't help.

Give PSVR2 devs a consistant target set up and something they can port PC VR games to easily.

So I made a huge mistake with the delivery address and after hours and hours of stress I managed to get through and they're going to contact UPS to change the delivery address to the right one. Now that's over I noticed there's a sale on steam so picked up that Budget Cuts game as it's super cheap right now. Anyone played it?

If it's on a decent offer then probably. I didn't finish budget cuts, but I had a load of other VR stuff on at once and was distracted by that, and pretty much forgot I have it. It's really immersive, getting down on the floor in real life to undo vents, things like that. I think you can also play seated if you don't want to do room scale.

There's loads of free stuff to look at too, like Google earth which is amazing for a bit of virtual tourism, especially now.

Make sure you get half life alyx, it's so strawberry floating good and the best non racing VR game I've played.

There's loads of free stuff to look at too, like Google earth which is amazing for a bit of virtual tourism, especially now.

Make sure you get half life alyx, it's so strawberry floating good and the best non racing VR game I've played.

I think I'll stick to Budget Cuts 1 now and I'll need to buy Virtual Desktop, then I'll think about branching out. I've still never used VR so I might get hideous motion sickness so I don't want to buy stuff too soon and then not be able to play it.

I get strawberry floating awful motion sickness but have no problem with most vr stuff. Room scale is absolutrly fine, things like that. The only thing that sets me of is if I'm standing up, and use an analogue stick to move me around, then my brain gets all strawberry floated and I feel nauseous, so I use blink/quick teleport for things like that (which budget cuts uses). For my sim racing, im in my playseat with a wheel, and my brain buys in to being sat in the car so I get no sickness. Same with elite dangerous.

Budget cuts has a demo if you're worried.

All of this is irrelevant anyway as it's just a gooseberry fool gimmick REMEMBER 3D TVS?! EXACTLY!

I look forward to the HOLY strawberry floating gooseberry fool VR IS INCREDIBLE posts :datass:

Edit: here's me playing some budget cuts

Some superhot vr
