PostAlmost dead xbox... resell value?
by JiggerJay » Tue May 18, 2010 10:38 pm

Just replaced my xbox as it's pretty much dead now.

It'll do anything thing, like media streaming, but play a game for longer than 30 minutes and the mother strawberry floater overheats and gives 2 red lights, I have tried many fixes to no avail (without voiding the non-existant warranty) Basically, there must be a market out there for a near dead 360, I could prob get away with selling to cex as pre owned, as they will only test it on the dashboard and maybe 5-10 mins on a game! Also chippers maybe interested as they know how they can fix them as well.

Is £50 for just the console, psu and prob the tv lead a good price? or should I be looking higher/lower.

Like I said it "technichally" works, it just overheats after about 20-30mins of gameplay, I could leave it on all day watching films and it'll be ok, so it's prob just some dust inside!

Doorstop, maybe.

You might also try taking it to an actual console repair place.

From my own experience, Game won't check. When I traded in my first wii, it had a massive crack all over the left side, and a chip missing, I just put it in a plastic bag, and didn't let them see the other sisde, took the credit, and legged it.

Don't they take an address and proof nowadays with some sort of ID? I'm sure Gamestation did that for me a couple of years ago. It'd be a bit stupid if they didn't, because I imagine a lot of people would try this

I didn't when I traded the aforementioned wii in. Maybe they do now, I don't know.

I am sure every time I have traded with Gamestation the only thing they ask is for you to write your postcode down for them on the credit note... just write a dodgy one and your set!

I rang them up and they pay £50 trade in, £40 cash, as it'll be classed as a core without a hdd! Not bad for a pretty dead unit!

Even if they do take your details, I don't think they've got a leg to stand on if they later discover the console is faulty. It's not as if you're providing a warranty. It's up to them to check it's working. If they don't bother to test it properly, that's their fault.

Meh, they sold me 3 pre-owned xbox 1 games back in the day on their website for about £12, and I never recieved them, and back then their customer service consisted of 1 guy who kept saying it has just been posted out, even after threatening with OFT they never refunded me.

Ok it's only £15 though!

The same thing happened to me at Gamestation when I went to trade in some games. Not been there since, it was a couple of years ago too, and since then I've usually traded in stuff at CEX (which you need a membership for, so that's maybe out). But yeah, Gamestation do that and I think GAME do it too (they both require 2 forms of ID).

Yeah so I sold the xbox! 8-)

Although I will never return to that store again... just in case! Basically the guy tested it, first the disc tray wouldn't open, he was like "if we can't get it open whilst the unit is vertical then we won't take it." I said I kept it flat, (technichally a lie since the unit was always upright.) we sorted that out, then he tried it.... Although all he did was load up Bionic Commando on it.

He was like right "do you want cash or credit?" I strawberry floated up and accidently gave a wrong postcode, and because he was typing it into a system rather than writing it down the system wouldn't take it... So like an idiot I gave him my real address... :fp: Albiet wrong postcode.

Although in hindsight even if it comes back to them now, it's their problem, I can claim when I sold it there was no overheating problems.

On the upside, this has convinced me never to buy a pre-owned xbox, ever.

Legit? then just list it on ebay or other forums as faulty/overheated, should get a few quid for it £30-50

This.

I dread to think how many knackered 360's are on the pre-owned market as anybody can get an overheating console working for long enough to pass a 2 minute quick test in a shop. When I see the condition of some pre-owned stuff I wonder why the hell the shop has bought them in and who in their right mind would buy them anyway. When you couple this with the cracking bundle deals you can get to secure a brand new minty fresh console it really seems a no brainer.
