Alpha Dream, company behind the Mario & Luigi RPG series, has declared bankruptcy.

Has this happened to any of your favourite videogame companies before and if so what happened to their game series after they left? Did the games stop or were they bought out? Hopefully Nintendo sets up a new inhouse version of Alpha Dream, and takes on the key staff.

I feel bad for not buying their last couple of games now. This news really sucks because this team is super creative and talented. Really hope someone pulls through and buys them out. Not really sure how this part works tho. Just don't want another Cing on our hands.

I'd always assumed Nintendo owned them. All their releases were Nintendo only bar one iOS game I believe.

Thought it was weird they just continued doing 3DS games after the Switch was out, and just remakes at that.

Wonder what this means for the future of that series? Maybe now Paper Mario will go back to being an RPG?

Hopefully all those affected will bounce back quickly.

Probably for the best. Dream Team was pretty bad, and I hear similar for Paper Jam. Both the remakes seemed to be received well, but why they thought remaking a DS game that was barely a decade old was a good idea is beyond me. It's like, you could probably still very easily buy the original and ofc the 3DS can still play it. But yeah, let's hope Paper Mario returns to its roots before that dies from a similar butchering of the series.

You were justifiably ticked off in the Switch thread for this. My mind’s slightly boggled that you’ve posted the exact same thing again.

Oh God yes, Cing. Tremendous developer of niche games. The games absolutely stopped as well - Hotel Dusk: Last Window didn’t even make it out in the US. Tragic stuff, makes me wish I’d bought Another Code on Wii.

I did get M&LSSDS, mind you. My conscience is relatively clear on this one. The games were going down in standards, but part of that seemed to be Nintendo’s fault. I hope the very talented chaps working there are picked up soon.

I don't think it's got anything to do with being a fan of the series. Suggesting that people losing their livelihoods is "for the best" is just crass, regardless of your opinion of the products they produced.

That’s correct, but Jezo’s contacted me over PM and we’ve talked it through there. Let’s move on (if he’s happy to).

It's cool Balladeer, I'll take this one. God forbid I talk about a game series on a gaming board. And big shocker that the main focus of my post on a gaming forum is gaming related. Of course I feel for the people involved. I'm not some heartless monster. But on the flipside, it's not ideal for people to be making consistently average games, nor is it to work in a company that's clearly struggling because of those average games and get stuck working on unnecessary remakes at an attempt to scrape money. I'm sure they were aware of the situation and will bounce back just fine. It sucks for 'em, but I just thought it made sense to reflect on the gaming side with something potentially more reflective and insightful.

Back on topic. Being a fan of Viewtiful Joe, I was sad to see Clover Studio go. I just want my VJ3 man. How you gonna be ending VJ2 on a cliffhanger and not follow up? ;-;

Like myself Jezo is a free-market capitalist - if companies aren't allowed to fail when their products are unsuccessful then the whole system would collapse! I'm not sure what these "livelihoods" you talk about are, but I am sure the ex-employees will return to the labour pool and find work befitting the market's demands.

("For the best" is clearly a comment on the future of the game series, not the fate of the employees now sadly made redundant)

Sad for the folks who have lost their jobs, never played any of their games but hopefully they can find new work as I'm sure they all just want to make something that people enjoy.

I was genuinely sad, like properly upset to the point where it was affecting my behaviour in general, when Looking Glass closed their doors back in 2000. They made some of my absolute favourite games of all time and it was just really depressing to think that they wouldn't be making any more. It still hurts to an extent that the great stuff they did was never really as appreciated as it could have been, and that so few games have built on what they did in the way I hoped.

Nintendo don’t really own that many studios bar Retro, Nd Cube, Monolith and NST.

The likes of Next Level Games, Intelligent Systems, Hal, Grezzo and Camelot, who consistently put out games using Nintendo IP’s are just affiliates who they regularly partner with.

Game Freak are the same, aren't they? Didn't they make Tembo the Badass Elephant?
