Doc Brown turns up at your house and offers you the opportunity of a lifetime. You have the chance to go back in time and have sex with your own mother so that she will buy you a sweet 4x4. That’s how that movie goes, right?

Anyway apparently incest is too much of a taboo for you, so Doc offers you another chance. You can go back in time and change one thing to see how it would change the world today. After that American kid vanished from a photo, Doc has become paranoid about the spacetime continuum of his friends, he will not let you change your or your families lives directly and so there is no chance of giving yourself a winning lottery ticket, telling your dad in 1979 to look out for Apple shares or anything serious and boring like that. Doc likes the little things to be changed, killing Hitler, sleeping with Cleopatra or arming the Confederates with atom bombs, you know little things…

Where would you go, what would you change and why? As a bonus question, what do you think the consequences would be?

I am utterly fascinated with the idea of evil winning, what would the world be like if the South had won the US civil war? If Hitler had won? Would things have ever improved, or would we still be living with slavery in America or Nazis ruling us?

You’d have to be pretty cruel to change history like that just to see what happened though.

I would go back to the late 1600s and give Isaac Newton copies of all the important scientific books and papers that have been written from his time up to our time. And then I would come back to now and see just how advanced we had become. Or if we had destroyed ourselves in a nuclear war in 1824…..

Wouldn't have stopped what was coming. The assassination of Franz Ferdinand was a spark, rather than the actual cause of World War I on it's own.
