Yeh it looks pretty great. It's good to see some real Orcs again rather than the CG crap we got in The Hobbit. Curious what the plot actually is and how they're going to make it feel tense, dramatic, exciting, when we all know where it's going.

I'm not sure most people will have any idea where a lot of the plot is going. Few people know anything about Numenor or the goings on in Middle Earth in the Second Age.

Even us Tolkien nerds have little idea where a lot of this id going. We know Galadriel, Elrond etc are going to survive but there's a lot of characters and plots that are being invented for this show.

Yes but it's factually impossible to have any tension in a prequel and I think we can all certainly agree on that.

No tension, it's a prequel.

Must say i've steered away from anything LotR related. I'm waiting for people to tell me it's VERY GOOD before I dip, because anything less won't be worth tainting the universe for me.

Are people feeling optimistic then? I may still wait until the entirety of the first series is done and for many people to tell me it's good before I dip in, but I really hope they do a good job.

I'm expecting it to be worse than LoTR, but better than the Hobbit movies.

That trailer at the top of the page does look pretty good, but like Curls I'm just not going to risk tainting the perfection of the Jackson trilogy unless it gets rave reviews. I hope it's amazing, but things seldom are.

Hmmmm.

Preezy wrote:The Hobbit - 7.5/10

Very enjoyable, although it's a shame it's going to be dragged over 2 more films.

Didn't notice anything different with regards to the 48fps business.

Preezy wrote:Hobbit 2: Die Hobbiter with a Vengeance - 8/10

Much better than the first one, Smaug was excellent but there were also aspects I didn't like:

1. Elves are now god-like battle ninjas who can do anything. Makes you wonder why they haven't conquered Middle Earth themselves.

2. The barrel scene was stupidly long and silly.

3. There was a complete lack of tension with the dwarves - none of them were ever in genuine danger and I never once thought "oh that ones a goner". Also didn't know any of their names and didn't have a vested interest in any of them or their plight.

4. Not much Hobbit in it for a film about Hobbits. He was only there to put on his ring and make the odd quip.

5. Stephen Fry - I love him but wasn't a fan of his performance in this. It was literally Stephen Fru playing himself but with a ginger moustache.

Other than those points, pretty good

Yeah and in hindsight the Hobbit films only served to dilute the strength of the LotR name.

I think the Hobbit movies are an abomination and I also absolutely adore them. I just can't resist Tolkien on screen.

The LotR movies are far from perfect, far better than the Hobbit movies obviously, with lots of stuff added/removed that annoy me (fake Aragorn death and horse snogging :x ), but they are wonderful pieces of cinema.

I think Amazon's show will fit between the two. It won't get close to the heights of LotR movies, but won't come close to the depths of the Hobbit movies.

Still not sure about this. Impossible not to compare to the original LOTR, which I adored for its fairly gritty look and NZ location. In contrast, this just looks very green-screened and I dunno, overly clean? Also find it bizarre that the two showrunners have been handed a five-season run despite having literally no writing credits. They don't even have Wikipedia pages!

Feels like a massive gamble but I hope it pays off. The figures HBO released yesterday for the HotD preview augur well.

I dunno, I'm watching The Fellowship of the Ring at the moment and I just can't see how anything can come close to replicating the perfection of the original trilogy, they're just right up there with the best things ever committed to celluloid, it doesn't matter how much money Amazon throws at it, this series just can't even hope to stand in the same room as the Jackson trilogy.

Fair enough to those that want to watch and enjoy this - I hope it's great, but I'm just plain-old-fashioned not interested

I've watched the first episode.

They really don't have many rights for anything from the Silmarillion do they! "Yeah so we just left Valinor to fight. Shhh don't mention Feanor.... :shifty:

Overall I liked it. I have the same issues I had with Jackson's movies (being a raging fanboy that hates change ;) ), but it just felt great to be back in Middle Earth.

I'm only 10 minutes in and you can already see where all Jeff's money has been spent.
