Hope the second episode is better, personally I found episode one quite boring. I want to be proved wrong though.

Like LOTR I needed to watch it several times for it to stand on its own. It’s not TROP’s fault; it’s just any time I watch anything fantasy related my mind immediately starts comparing it to other works like Warhammer, Zelda etc.

Still, seeing Nora again from HIMYM as Bronwyn…

I was a little sceptical but I think this is actually pretty cool so far.

I really like Elrond in this!

Interested to see what they do with The Stranger -- I think the safe bet is that he's Gandalf despite the timeline not really working, but I saw an interesting theory that it could be a Blue Wizard (they arrived earlier than Gandalf) or a relatively obscure Maia called Tilion.

It'll make my inner fanboy rage if he is Gandalf. :x

The thing that makes me question whether he is Gandalf is that would have been a natural reveal for the end of either the first two episodes.

Yeah, it all feels like a red herring to me.

But I also have a feeling that they will go with the obvious.

How far does the wizarding spectrum go in Middle Earth?

“I have returned as Radagast the Mauve”

It goes all the way to Merlin the Gamboge.

My guess is he’s one of the Blue Wizards only loosely mentioned by Tolkien and therefore easy for TV writers to expand on without annoying anyone.

So he will be useless until an enemy uses magic on him /ff

I'm not sure if we need to still spoiler speculation but just in case:

I really am torn on whether he is Gandalf or somebody else. There are hints either way.

But I just remembered that when Galadriel was searching for Sauron, she came across the place that was so evil the fire there wasn't hot.

When Nori fell into the crater, she said that the fire wasn't hot.

Which points to the stranger being somebody evil.

I enjoyed the first episode, everything was very pretty and the plot's getting off to a nice slow start. This is going to be a long, slow burner of a show so I'm content for it to take its time setting the world up.

Invicta did a good primer video on the first ages that helped orient me to what was going on. I'm not the biggest LotR lore nerd so I found it useful. I'll link it below for anyone who wants:

Is this set during the same age(s) as The Silmarillion?

Edit: A quick look on Wikipedia suggests its set during the third age, so yes, partly.

Yes and no.

Most of the Silmarillion is set during the First Age. This series only had a brief glimpse of the First Age.

The Silmarillion has a section dealing with the Second Age, but I don't think Amazon have the rights to any of that, they are limited to the LoTR appendices.

Edit: Just saw your edit! This series is set in the Second Age.

Was wondering if I should read the Silmarillion before watching this but sounds like I don't need to.

It'd give you a lot of backstory, but I don't think it's really necessary for this show.

Maybe just the Akallabeth section, that'll fill you in on Numenor and what Sauron was up to in the Second Age.

I'd be very interested to know what the 'I have issues with black people as make-believe characters' and 'I have no issues with white Jesus' venn diagram looks like.

"No no no, I'm not being racist! It's just that Tolkien meant it to be an ancient version of Europe and so it's historically inaccurate to have black people! See not racist, I just want 100% historical accuracy.

Watched the past two episodes and I’m intrigued and enjoying it and for me that’s what matters I suppose.

I found it hard not to compare it to Jackson’s films at first but soon just let that slide.

The only thing I find quite strange is the way it’s shot, it’s almost like a movie, I can’t explain it but watching House Of The Dragon, it still feels like a TV show, (that’s not a negative), but watching this it feels like I’m watching a movie. Not sure if it’s the camera quality or the stream or filming technique

It's probably the $billions they spent on it.

The buffering on this is making it almost unwatchable for me

Looking online seems I'm not the only one either, odd as I thought by now it'd be sorted out.
