Yes and no. If you are a big LoTR fan then it's essential. But it's not an easy read, most people will find it extremely hard to get through.

This. It's best read piecemeal. Hard to get through in one attempt. The appendices do help with the names. The unfinished tales are well worth the effort as well.

I read LOTR every year and have done since the first film came out but I've only read the Silmarillion 3 or so times.

Apparently they're using some First Age stuff to set the stage for the show. Screenshot is probably from that.
