Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - Amazon.

Not watched the films, tried reading the book but got bored and dropped it, its a nice idea and I'm sure many will like it but for me LOTR is a bit gooseberry fool and I don't understand the hype.

I'm sure I'll pirate it at some point like I do with all these tv series.

It has potential. Lots of lore/backstories out there.

It’s fine to not like it, but I am always confused by people who feel the need to state that opinion in a thread like this.

Did Errkal see the thread title “Amazon announce Lord of the Rings TV series, set before Fellowship” and literally think “THIS IS WHERE I TELL PEOPLE I COULDN’T EVEN FINISH THE BOOK!”.

It took me months to get into Fellowship, but once I did...

It’s not always true, it depends on what the story is.

If the prequel is about Frodo as a child, there is not going to be much suspense if they show him in a life or death situation.

Until he dies, and then it's revealed this was a story about another Frodo Baggins, Frodo's dead uncle and namesake.

But outside of prequel twists, in the LOTR you know Frodo isn't going to die in the Fellowship when he gets stabbed by the ringrwraiths, or by the cave troll. They are still suspenseful. If I rewatch a film it doesn't lose all suspense just because I know what is going to happen.

Unless he dies and get's buried and then later Gandalf digs him back up and magics him back to life again.
That seems like something he might do .

*shrugs* I guess my logic is it adds some context to why I wouldn't watch it, but it seems like a good idea as its a super popular franchise so it should do well.

The first time you read/watch LoTR, you have no real idea if Frodo is going to live or die in either of those scenes.

You imagine that he is the hero of the story and so will survive, but you don’t know that until you continue with the story. Re reading/watching it takes away a lot of suspense as you know that he isn’t going to die. It’s like with Gandalf in Moria, the first time you think he is dead, afterwards you know he is coming back.

Sure it can still be a tense scene, but it is never going have the same level of suspense when you already know a characters lives/dies/comes back.

I am not having a go, I just find it strange to not like something but to post in threads about it.

It's be like me going into the Wrestling thread to tell everyone that I hope they enjoy Wrestlemania this year, but I will not be watching as I couldn't even finish watching one of them.

Even the first time I watched Lord of the Rings it would be pretty hard to believe someone called The Ring Bearer is going to die in film one of what was already known to be a trilogy but those scene's still had huge impact as death is not the only outcome that could have changed the story.
Frodo could have been Crippled like Bran in Game of Thrones and he's still The Ring Bearer just that he's now less walky so there's ways he could be critically changed by being injured that could quite easily be explained away later in a world that includes magic. Maybe whatever crippled him somehow blocks magical healing for long enough that he can't be healed while on the quest with the ring it's not exactly story breaking.

I can understand how you found it boring though. The writing style is kind of dated. And the start of it is a bit cack admittedly.

I'd still recommend the movies. They cut out a lot of the crap bits. Just clear a lot of time for them
