In this week's episode, Gundil the Hunter wakes up from his coma - will he tell Julia that he kissed Bognark at the summer festival? Elsewhere, another traveller arrives at the gates of Rhondilflog with dangerous (and sexy) consequences!

It's called 'worldbuilding', mate. It's what makes the book interesting.

I'm glad you used the word book and not novel because plot is severely lacking

If I wrote a book about the adventures of a glacier it would still move at a quicker pace than the fellowship of the ring.

Shakespeare's stuff was meant to be performed, though, so you could say it's boring to read :shifty:

I welcome a new fantasy TV series, though my preference would be for a properly done Wheel of Time, (I think Sony now have the rights for that or something) than what ever is left over from the Tolkien stable.

One thing that would concern me is with how GoT has taken a noticeable drop in quality once they passed the GRRM prepared work.

Oh on the subject of the LOTR books and films, I thought the LOTR trilogy on paper got better with each book, but on film, it got worse with each film. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In this week's season finale, the battle for Cyromark reaches a thrilling conclusion, and Mary Grotface finally chooses who to marry, with devastating (and sexy) consequences!

I'll stop now.

If it was done properly, that could be utterly incredible.

They would strawberry float it up so badly though.

They are basically children who ought to stick to Harry Potter.

I like to think I'm pretty well read - I've read all sorts from more "high brow" works like Milan Kundera and Salman Rushdie, through Ian Mcewan and David Mitchell to more "popular" stuff like Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. To me the LOTR trilogy are just not good books.

And actually, as it has been mentioned, I have read the Harry Potter books and would say I derived more enjoyment from them than I did Lord of The Rings. I'm not saying that they are more worthy, or a greater form of literature, but if I were forced to read a Harry Potter book or a LOTR book I would choose Potter every time.

If people love Tolkein then that's great - I would never deny someone's pleasure in reading something they love, just don't try and make out that anyone who doesn't like it is deficient in some way! ;)

all that reading (obviously too slow) and you didnt see the winky face  :fp:

My post was pretty clear that I wasn't suggesting HP was "better" literature that LOTR - just that I personally enjoyed reading it more.

There is plenty of documented literary criticism of LOTR since its original publication - the fact that some people believe it to be not the greatest example of writing shouldn't come as too much of a shock, nor should it diminish your own enjoyment or appreciation of it.

But why pick one when you could have both?

On topic comment so I don't get banned: I wonder what kind of art direction they'll go with this. I don't really want them to try and emulate the gritty film style, but I'd prefer that to the Hobbit's trying-to-be-more-fantastical-but-still-enough-like-the-main-trilogy
