I think late 2024 is most likely.

Yeah, September/October 2024 would be my guess.

It's going to kill any momentum the show has managed to build up. People are used to a year between seasons, a 2 year gap isn't going to help it.

As long as Bezos keeps throwing money at it, it'll keep going, momentum or no. I think it'll eventually end up being one of the all time great fantasy shows, by sheer cumulative weight, but it's going to take a long time getting there.

Five seasons are confirmed, it was part of the deal with the Tolkien estate. It's just probably going to take a decade to get there.

I know it'll keep going, but it is going to suffer from a 2 year break between seasons.

I think a year is the expectation with most series, I agree.

I’m surprised they didn’t just film season 2 this year whilst 1 was showing or just agree to be honest, seems to be what most studios do.

I know they moved production from NZ to the UK, but it's crazy they didn't start filming again until recently.

There's talk House of the Dragon is in the same situation and won't be back until 2024. Same happened with the final season of GoT, Stranger Things always has long breaks between seasons, seems to just be becoming more the norm with these huge event type TV shows.

Add the Mandalorian to that list, and the Bad Batch. Doctor Who has been doing it for a long time, also.

What I can't get my head around is the weird licencing from the Tolkien estate. Surely they must realise that attempts to maintain some sort of literary 'purity' are damaged by mainstream access to the TV show?

Pretty sure both JRR and Christopher Tolkien both advocated for the stories of the extended lore to be told and retold in different ways by different people. The Silmarillion was never meant to be an unchanging, static, rigid bible.

Lord of the Rings is going to go public domain at some point, might as well get some big bucks from Amazon before then. Not allowing Amazon to use stuff from The Silmarillion is a headscratcher though.

LoTR will be public domain in the next couple of decades.

I'm not sure about the Silmarillion, it'll depend whether JRR or Christopher counts as the author under copyright laws. I think it's JRR, but if Christopher counts as a co-author, they have copyright until 2090.

Just finished watching the first series. Really enjoyed it as someone who hasn't read the books and has only seen the films.
Liked the transformation of the Southlands into Mordor
The Sauron reveal was good
Enjoy all the various plotlines I think, although not sure what's up with Numenor captains daughter.
Went and watched the film prologue after and looks like the elf rings are the same. I presume this series goes until someone chops off Sauron's finger?
Song at the end nearly ruined the entire series for me

That would seem to be the natural final season yeah. I would guess the final shot is Gollum's friend finding the ring.

Vaguely LOTR related but maybe the most underrated tweet I've seen

Ah come on, Frodo definitely hated the experience of that whole trip.

I'm seeing a lot of people on Twitter saying "obviously! it was shite!" which I'm finding a bit baffling. It wasn't perfect but I thought it was fairly good, with a lot of potential.
