Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

Renewed for 2nd season.

Amazon to Adapt J.R.R. Tolkien’s Globally Renowned Fantasy Novels, The Lord of the Rings, for Television with a Multi Season Production Commitment

Television adaptation, exploring new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, slated to debut exclusively on Prime Video

Amazon today announced it has acquired the global television rights to The Lord of the Rings, based on the celebrated fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, with a multi-season commitment. The upcoming Amazon Prime Original will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment.

“The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, Head of Scripted Series, Amazon Studios. “We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” said Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins. “Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”

Set in Middle Earth, the television adaptation will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The deal includes a potential additional spin-off series.

I heard rumours of this last week. Interesting but I would have preferred it to have been set after Return of the King. Or set during the LOTR book timeline but new side stories that occasionally intertwined with the main storyline.

I'm quietly confident this could turn out to be decent.
I wonder if the filming will be done in New Zealand again as we could see the return of some classic locations.

While I can see there's potential for disaster there's also potential for something great so surely it's worth at least watching it before declaring it dead?

I just don't see a need to mess any further with that universe. The Hobbit was enough.

It doesn’t bother me if it’s gooseberry fool. I don’t believe it’s supposed to be in the same continuity as the films so what’s the problem?

Will it be as mind numbingly long and tediously boring as the films?

There's like no suspense with a prequal because you literally know the future.

I hope it's as good as The Hobbit trilogy.

The truth hurts.

Not as much as watching Lord of the Rings, but close.

This could be decent, I will reserve judgement until I actually see it.

Set before Fellowship is an interesting way of wording it. Does that mean it is after the Hobbit? There would be interesting things to explore there in places like Gondor, but I’d imagine they would want to show the Shire and I am not sure what interesting stories they could tell there in that timeframe. I am not really very interested in a Hobbit soap opera.

They don’t have the rights to the Silmarillion so they can’t really show the wars against Morgoth, but they should go way back before LoTR and show the rise and fall of Númenor, there must be enough stuff in LoTR and the appendixes to build a good story around that island and the events on the mainland with Sauron.

Way too much fuckery, even by the excellent LotR films, has been done with the license for me to get upset by this. +1 wait and see. Though the quote about Bezos wanting his own Game of Thrones and them then signing this could be a pointer to what we're in for.

Is there anything in the Silmarillion about the fall of the 9 human ring bearers? That could make an interesting series.

It’s been a while since I read it, but I don’t think it goes into detail about them.

They can’t use the Silmarillion anyway, they are restricted to things/characters mentioned in the Hobbit and LoTR, they can’t use anything that is solely in the Sil as they don't have the rights.
