PostAmazon Prime Instant Video
by Death's Head » Mon Dec 07, 2015 9:51 am

Having signed up to the free 30 day trail for Amazon Prime (so I can get my Christmas presents next day :datass: ) I decided to try out the Instant Video. My initial thoughts on this are that it isn't a patch on Netflix, either there isn't a lot of content or just difficult finding it and there seems to be too much stuff you have to pay for, even if you have Prime membership. I've been watching The Man in The High Tower which I'm really enjoying so far (about 5 episodes in but still don't really know a great deal about the plot) but have found the quality is poor compared to Netflix, constantly dropping into SD.

Anyone else using Amazon Prime video? What are your thoughts?

Yes?

I have had a trial before and barely used it. There was nothing there that tempted me to pay for it.

I am interested in The Man in The High Tower but I will wait until I am offered another trial and then just binge it.

Watched It Follows on it last night and the quality was fine. As for the content I don't think there's anywhere near as much as Netflix now has but the interface is so terrible it's impossible to tell.

I'm already thinking about series 2. Do I need to wait for a free trial next year or pay for one month and watch it then? :x

Yes?

I have looked at it before but found the idea that you had to pay for certain things on top a bit gooseberry fool. As an example, they wanted to charge for the latest episode of The Walking Dead (I think £1.89), something which I had already downloaded and watched for free.

Man in the High Castle was bloody excellent. Finished it last night. Going to check out that Robot thing as I hear that's good.

Prime is definitely worth the money now given the free postage, music and video, although if it was a choice between just Amazon Video and Netflix I would still go for Netflix.

I used to use it quite a bit before getting Unblock US for Netflix. Now there's very little on there that I can't get on some variation of Netflix. It might get more useful if Netflix is going to be shifting more towards their own original content though.

Had Prime for a year and always thought the content was pretty poor to be honest. The original series aren't a patch on Netflix and there's insufficient other content to back it up.

I think people are getting confused between Prime Instant Video which is like Netflix and then the extra stuff you can buy/rent like iTunes/Google Play.
Rights are a lot easier to get for buy/rent stuff than streaming.

It doesn't help that when Amazon launched their subscription streaming services they didn't separate subscription content from rental/purchase content, particularly in their own apps, so you'd often go to watch something on the Amazon apps only to be told you had to pay more to get it.

I love it I'l admit netflix has a better selection though. However the fact I can download videos on Amazon video is really great though. Amazon music is amazing as well, Love the amount of music that is free that I can download. I much prefer it to Itunes. Imo it's totally worth it for all those features.

I was quite impressed with it until it started thinking I was based outside the UK and wouldn't let me watch anything. I'm not so I've no idea what's causing it.

Some great series on there, adding Sleepy Hollow and Transparent to those already mentioned. Avoid Outlander though, it's utter shite.

Is it possible you might have a VPN extension installed in your browser? (eg. Hola).

I'm still pissed off with Amazon for out bidding Netflix for Top Gear. And getting Mr Robot when Netflix would have meant it gets way more viewers.

Yeah this is my main problem with the service. I subscribe to it at present as my wife did it in the summer for the delivery service. It is so frustrating to search for films and programmes to find that most of the results are rental and purchase content. I would prefer the ability to only search for items that are available to watch under the subscription.

I quite liked Vikings (does get a bit repetitive ala Walking Dead though), currently don't have a sub but will probably get one to watch the next season of Vikings and watch Man in the High Castle at the same time. But as others have said the interface is crap and of what's on there is also on Netflix. (at least last time I checked).
