Amazon to stop accepting Visa's UK-issued credit cards over high fees

Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) said on Wednesday it would stop accepting Visa Inc (V.N) credit cards issued in the United Kingdom from next year due to the high fees charged by the payment processor for transactions.

"As a result of Visa's continued high cost of payments, we regret that Amazon.co.uk will no longer accept UK-issued Visa credit cards as of 19 January, 2022," an Amazon spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Amazon customers can still use Visa debit cards, Mastercard and Amex credit cards, and Eurocard, the company said in a note to its customers.

Both of my Credit Cards are Visa. Think I need to ditch one of them for a Mastercard by the sounds of things.

Bet they'll reach an agreement, as that can't be to either side's benefit to let this go ahead. I think there's over 20 million VISA credit cards in use in the UK.

I noticed that Natwest were binning Visa debit cards in the near future for the mastercard equivalent.

People need to ditch Amazon rather than ditching their credit cards.

There is a certain arrogance from Amazon here regarding this decision. Most customers who have an understanding of debit/credit cards won't be using their debit cards for high value online transactions if they have any sense, and most people aren't going to want to get a Mastercard just for Amazon.

If they follow through with this, I think it'll hit their UK profits harder then they expect.

I'm buying much less from Amazon these days but honestly it's mostly because it seems to be awash with fake products now.

I'm not going to judge anyone for buying from Amazon, but if you can avoid doing so it's a good thing. Suggesting people don't use Amazon isn't meant to be critical of people who do, it's meant to be critical of Amazon!

Don't mean to be weird here but why only UK based Visa cards?

Two massive Amazon Warehouses are opening here in the next year to deal with the EU and of course it will be dead handy for us living here.

Probably worth noting that Amazon's own credit card is a Mastercard.

I'd be curious to see that stats on what percentage of people use the various payment methods. I suspect a lot of people just use whatever debit card they get from their current account.

I really don't think criticising amazon qualifies as the lofty heights of moral puritanism you seem to think it does.

Nice bit of drama watching 2 massive companies battle it out in public.

I do wonder how many UK customers are actually impacted by this. It's pretty rare in my experience for credit cards to be Visa Credit. I've only ever had Mastercard credit cards. By comparison, it's pretty rare to have mastercard debit, visa debit is much more common.

Also isn't it AMEX that is notoriously expensive for sellers to process?

I've been trying to avoid buying from Amazon as much as I can and it's often easier and without a financial penalty. I'm looking at John Lewis for a new TV and they charge the same amount as Amazon. My local Argos is inside my nearest Sainsburys so for smaller/cheaper items it's just as handy to pick it up in store.
