I can’t remember when it’s ever been less hassle.

I had to send off my passport (actual one and not a photocopy), birth certificate (actual one and not a photocopy) and utility bill (actual bill and not a home printed version) by registered post to prove my identity for an account. Maybe this isn't always the case but it can be.

That usually happens when a company can't identify you but most financial service companies will try and validate your ID via online records.

Did they ask for your Mother's maiden name too?

I hope it wasn't a Nigerian Prince asking....

Visa didn't have to up their fee's from 0.3% to 1.5% because they could after the UK left the EU.

It's not a Pro Amazon argument either but Visa UK deserve some criticism.

Fine, but as you say, that’s not a Pro Amazon argument. Criticise VISA all you want for raising fees but Amazon dropping them is not some pro-consumer martyrdom.

Most customers who have an understanding of debit/credit cards won't be using their debit cards for high value online transactions if they have any sense, and most people aren't going to want to get a Mastercard just for Amazon.

If they follow through with this, I think it'll hit their UK profits harder then they expect.

They’ll make a deal beforehand. There’s a lot of comments I’ve seen elsewhere pulling Visa apart and whilst that might be fair, let’s not forget Amazon isn’t exactly an ethical businesses and aren’t they based their U.K. operations in Luxembourg for better incentives and taxation?

Seems like an own goal on Amazon's part, especially considering all the negative press that will result from it.

It's not as if they couldn't afford the transaction fees either, their boss is sending rockets into space ffs!

If Amazon can survive paying strawberry float all tax and frequently abusing and taking advantage of their workforce I doubt any negative press from this will hurt them.

They're just strong arming Visa into lowering their fees

I only use debit cards, don't really need a credit card.

Using credit cards tends to be a good idea for bigger purchases due to the extra protection it offers

Section 75 protection is a good reason for using credit cards, but in this day and age I do wonder how often that actually gets invoked.

Lastminute.com tried to refund my cancelled flights in vouchers which I absolutely did not want so I went through my credit card and they issued a chargeback and I got a full refund.

I really don't think criticising amazon qualifies as the lofty heights of moral puritanism you seem to think it does.

Yeah but all the sneering whenever Amazon come up on here is getting a bit boring now though mate. Amazon are exceptionally handy and useful for a lot of people despite the company’s tax situation or whatever else it is. They’ve created lots of jobs up here, and their range of goods coupled with their delivery service is a godsend to a lot of people like me who can’t leave the house so well.

Surely your local artisans can manufacture everything you need and have it delivered for the same price?!?!!

Excellent news! My wife buys tons of stuff off Amazon and uses her Nationwide Visa Credit Card.

I use my Amex card which pays (a regularly declining rate of) cash back and have done so for 20yrs. Never pay any interest so Amex are paying me to use their card with Amazon and everywhere else I use it at (more than you realise).

I’m sure Visa and Amazon will come to a settlement though

Net result, Amazon have a load of new customers for it's own Mastercard (making yet more money) whilst still accepting all other forms of payment.

It's evil genius at its best.

I know it’s slightly off topic but if anybody is looking for a quick credit card then Bip is (I think) the first and only fully digital credit card, it took about 5 minutes to set up and you can use it instantly, the limit is only £1,200 but I imagine they increase it over time
