Its the extra supports that get me. Did no one check before when they chose the poses?

I still want to get one but I'm going to have to go actually look at them in person before hand.

Welcome to real lighting.

So are they still 'what we should have expected'?

I think the paint or inks are lower quality in places but the models are the same. I wouldn't expect different from promotional shots. It's largely a lighting and photoshop thing too.

Some are more of a downgrade than others. The Peach one looks the worst to me, and that's the one I've gone for :( It's more than lighting too. Detail that was etched in before is now painted on, and a lot has been simplified.

Quality is not the best, but these are mass market items. Don't think I will bother myself and seem a bit childish to me.

Their amateurish build indicates they are build for children, yes. The pricepoint also indicates this.

I struggle to see why amiibos are childish. The build quality has dropped fom the promotional pictures but the technology is interesting. It'll be cool to discover the additonal gaming functionality that the figurines offer and I think that will determine their success or otherwise.

Theyre no more childish than any other figures or merch people collect.

But those are high quality. Each to their own I guess, but I won't be getting these, which are basically a massive cash cow.

Really??

I'm all for the love of Nintendo, but lets not make things what they aren't. This is Nintendo's take on Skylanders, nothing more, nothing less.

They are inherently childish, doesn't mean they can't be cool and adults cannot enjoy them.

Exactly. If the technology is used in fun ways that add another angle to gaming, I think they could be a great addition. Personally I'm disappointed with the reduction in build quality from the promotional shots; I'll be holding off from buying any unless the gameplay additions really take off.

My disappointment with Amiibo is that it doesn't really add anything really thats adding a new angle to gaming, its very very similar to Skylanders and is basically hidden DLC. I honestly couldn't understand at the time why people were getting 'hyped' for it. It would be cool if they allow to play as your favourite character in ANY game or something, but we'll wait and see if thats true.

I do think theres quite a few revisionist views in here as well. Don't think anyone was saying at the time 'oh, well theres obviously gonna be a drop in the quality of the models', everyone was pretty much hook line and sinkered by it. The poles holding up the models are genuinelly cringeworthy.

Pretty much all of what DML's said but especially this. I was thinking about buying a couple to try out the gimmick but not whilst they look this bad.

I dunno about 'revisionist views', DML - I think it's just a case of people being a tad disappointed with the retail versions compared to the original models. People weren't to know that the final versions would be poorer quality. It's the same with, say, Disney Infinity Marvel. I was hyped for that based upon the promotional pictures but, after seeing the figures in the flesh, I was again frustrated with the level of detailing and finishing quality.

Amiibos may add a new aspect to gaming but we don't really know what they do yet. I doubt they'll hit your target of allowing you to play as that character in any game; few games will cater for, say, two dozen possible characters that the user may or may not have.

But, yes, I'm not in the market for Amiibos based upon what we know at present. If the quality increases, the cost falls, or attractive functionality arrives than I'll take another look.

I think with this being nintendo, I expected a bit more quality because their products are usually more polished than their competitors. It is a great idea though.

I think with this being Nintendo, they added so much of the horrific looking supports so Mummy has less to complain to them about when little Timmy breaks it.

Jawa, there are people claiming in just the last couple of pages that a drop in quality was 'inevitable'. That's what I'm referring to. Get those Ninty blinkers off!
