PostAn apology
by rudderless » Thu Aug 12, 2010 11:00 pm

For the record, I'm genuinely sorry Brer left, and for any small part I may have played in that. I was merely sticking up for DM in the thread, then Brer started calling me a banana split and so I reacted to that (as I think most people would, let's be honest). I didn't want Brer to leave, and ultimately he made the decision on his own, but it seems it was a direct result of his week-long ban, and perhaps if I hadn't said anything at all, he wouldn't have started swearing and insulting other members.

I'm also sorry to those who think I'm some kind of troll, because that couldn't be further from the truth; I certainly don't go around seeking arguments with others, but if there's something I strongly disagree with I'll say so, and again I think that's true of most people on here. I never intend to condescend to people. If I phrase things differently to some of you in an argument, that's just the way I write. If things start getting nasty, I usually aim for a witty riposte rather than swearing at people, and I think that maybe comes across as arrogant. But if any of you knew me, you'd know I'm probably my own harshest critic (well, with the exception of Floex and Sandycoin, it would seem).

Anyway, I've PMed Sandycoin because as far as I'm aware, the only arguments we've had were football-related (or, to be more specific, centred around City and United) so I'm really not sure what the whole 'stalking' accusation was about. Floex, I'm not sure what your beef is with me, because I certainly don't have a problem with you and wasn't aware of any bad blood between us.

In future, I think it's best that I don't say what I think in some cases, as this evidently causes ill feeling, and that's the last thing I want. I come on here because I like talking about games (and, occasionally, other stuff like films, TV and football) with all of you, and I don't want that to have to change. I do think part of the issue stems from my job, and people thinking that I believe I'm somehow 'above' people (as if being a mediocre games journalist is anything to aspire to), which I reiterate could not be further from the case. Most journalists don't bother with forums because of this kind of problem, but the whole reason I remain here is because I want to feel like I'm the same as the rest of you; we all love videogames and we love discussing them.

Anyway, yeah. As you were.

The original thread was a week ago. In Off Topic today there's a thread discussing Brer's departure where two or three people have accused me of trolling, or of essentially being responsible for Brer leaving.

I'm not a particular fan of anything other than blind neutrality but in my opinion you've done nothing wrong dude, despite the calls of moderator bias and whatnot. Apologising for what I myself see as an act that any other forumite would do in your position - probably without anyone batting an eyelid were it not for the fact that you supposedly have friends in high places - and contest someone calling you some pretty foul stuff obviously takes guts.

Hats off.

You're not the only person who should get part of the blame. Cannot believe DM got his undies in a twist over a thread he's done many times before, and then for Nate to appear out of nowhere and join in... what an utter ******* ****. And I mentioned this in the thread, but if you're going to tell someone how to behave then try not having a pop at them beforehand.

Brer rocked (though he isn't without blame) and I hope he posts here again.

I probably wouldn't have commented at all, except for the fact that Brer's original comment to DM seemed unnecessarily hostile, and the fact that it was the third thread in a couple of days where he'd been insulting people. DM hardly threw his toys out of the pram, he was just disappointed that he wanted to make a joke and Brer decided for no apparent reason to spoil it. Nate only joined in because by that stage Brer had seemingly lost it (and, y'know, he was being a mate and fighting my corner).

I only advised him to lay off the swears because he was always likely to get in trouble once he started hurling the c-bomb around with gay abandon.

I can only imagine he was going through a bad patch at the time, because I've never found him to be that aggressive before, and that's why it's a shame he's gone, particularly as I was one of many, many people who enjoyed his Pripyat thread.

Whoa, time out Greenbay. I don't think I threw my toys out of the pram. Let's face it, alot of what's posted on forums is recycled anyway.

It was going quite well I thought, and so I was naturally disappointed when Brer decided to spoil it because 'he'd seen it before on 4ch*n 20 years ago!'

I spent the best part of a couple of minutes knocking up that .jpg.

Grrrr.

Ok, first things first, I don't know if Brer has left or not. The only person who said he has is me. So for people going 'They always comeback' we don't know if he has even left. The topic was meant to be in jest but kind of spiralled out of control quite quickly. I made the topic because it seems another member whose posts I enjoy reading may have left this site behind through more pointless bickering. Sarge, Albear, Dangerblade and possibly Brer all left on dodgy terms and it seems the posters I enjoy reading are disappearing in quick succession and if it continues to proceed then I may do the same

I didn't agree with the banning, as you said it yourself Rudd, that you didn't need to comment but you did and various threads I popped in you and Brer were being as bad as each other. One gets banned but the other didn't. I don't agree with that

Rudderless, I said in the 'Brer' topic that I have nothing against you, I enjoy reading your insights but me and you have bumped heads in the past which I proceed to comment about. I probably shouldn't have brought it up as tha's all behind us now. I admire you coming forward and apologising to Brer though and hope he reads it

Now let's forget our troubles with a big bowl of strawberry ice cream

Sarge was permanently banned and Dangerblade lost a bet.

That picture "requires gold account" thing was awesome. I'd seen it on 4ch*n before but I really wanted to see who'd fall for it, wish people would stop spoiling things that are reposted, because a lot of people don't frequent 4ch*n (for good reason ).

What hostile comment did he aim at DM? And how was the thread ruined by his post when people continued finding the opening post funny even after Brer "ruined it". Would have made more sense to not draw attention to it, or for DM to send a private message to Brer asking to alter his post (which he once did with me). Also, you had a pop at him for posting a gif and all I saw was him retaliate against that. Yeah, he crossed a line, but you're not without fault, you even started off advising him on how to behave by calling him names.

edit: but this thread isn't about that and I have a feeling we'll only end up going in circles anyway. Unless something amazingly wrong is posted I'll make this my last post on the matter.

It was a very odd thread. Fingers crossed Brer ignores the light and comes back to us.

I'm more outraged that people get warnings over the word ''banana split''. Rubbish forum/thread/mods.
