I have always associated nerdery to be more tightly constrained in definition that general geekery, a distinction blurred by the stereotypical crossover of nerds being geeks over some commonly recurring subject matters. Does this answer your question?

People can be nerds for many different reasons, you might have an encyclopaedic knowledge of bee species, be obsessed with 1920's radios or like solving complex mathematical problems just for fun.
None of these things are common pursuits, whereas the stereotypical 'nerdy' things like comic books and videogames are really anything but as they are common interests, the only way they become nerdy is when someone has an obsessive interest or deep knowledge about them that most people don't have.
