I bought a second copy of ACNL and played it about as much as the first, to be honest. I loved that game. In fact, I'd buy another copy if this wasn't coming soon!

It's a super popular one that's been on the market for ages. Think you might have heard of it. It's called mindpower.

Seriously, though, no.

I've never played an animal crossing game I like the art style and want to play this game. I've seen the trailer posted on eshop, read the gameplay section on wikipedia and watched Kerrs lovely video and.... I still don't properly understand what this game is.

So basically you start life in a desserted island and are able to craft things or use earned currency to purchase them with the idea of building a happy community. Your environment and avartar are customisable and the in game seasons change with the real world seasons.

This game is open-ended and non-linear - but can you win or lose at this game? Are there negative consequences to making bad choices? Can you "complete" this game? Are there actual games / objectives or is it more of a talk to this NPC or plant a tree here type of game? Is it a big open world you get to explore or a smaller but potentially densely packed island?

You can’t really lose no and there aren’t really hugely negative consequences, certainly not major things that cant be undone.

You don’t really complete the game, you more end up setting your own goals and working towards them.

And it’s definitely not a big open world. Past Animal Crossings you have a small village (with plenty of going on) and a few other locations you can go visit like an island or shops-things like that.

As soon as you've completed the introduction, that's it. A decently-sized open world to just mess around in doing what you want within the village, setting your own tasks for what you want to be doing. New Horizons is making that world a whole lot more customisable with the pathing tool and ability to place furniture outside, along with including goals to work toward with the Nook Miles system.

It's pretty much rural village life: the simulator with animals instead of people (except for your own characters). It's an escape into an alternate reality that runs concurrent with our own.

In a way, it certainly is. There's freedom to do what you want - whether fishing, bug catching, chatting with the residents, or plenty of other things within the game. There's events that happen on certain days, and there's no feeling of ever being rushed.

One thing I find is it’s not a game you have massive sessions on. Once you’re into a routine, you spend 30 mins to an hour each day going about your business.

But as the game runs concurrent to real world time, there's no consequence for not playing (like those tamagotchi toys) - where you haven't done anything so there drought and all the islanders leave etc? I like the idea of 30min bursts whilst communting for gathering materials to craft into things and check on the islanders but I also want to be able to not pick it up for a few weeks if I wish

Also does anyone have any idea what kind of goals you are likely to be set for this Nook miles systems - just trying to guage what kind of experience this will be

Yeah, your island will degrade in quality and villagers will leave. It happens fairly slowly and it doesn’t take too much work to sort out and then villagers will return etc.

Personally Stardew Valley failed to live up to the task of another Animal Crossing, with Animal Crossing you can complete tasks however quickly or slowly you like (relatively of course, there will still be some things that you need to wait for) and it’s just a wonderful, charming game to chill out to, Stardew Valley just seemed to try and cram too much into a day in my opinion, I felt like you could miss a lot in day while in Animal Crossing you only miss stuff if you don’t load it up.

Still certain this will be my game of the year, just looks amazing

Animal Crossing will easily be my most played game this year. If it clicks with you, it's pure gaming bliss but it's definitely not for everyone. I totally understand how some people just don't get it.

Thought you were referring to the one near the airplane but then I realised that was on her left :fp: curse getting my left and right confused sometimes! As for the chap on the right, I can see it just being a young Chip, or maybe Chip’s offspring?

Edit, is that the official box art anyway? If so I’ll add it to the op :)

Just rewatched the E3 Direct segment and I really can't wait for this.

I really like how it's launching on March 20th too...ie, the start of Spring.
